WHAT DOES GOD HATE?

WHAT DOES GOD HATE? Yes, our God is a God of love. How great is that love? “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life, (John 3:16 NIV). On the other hand God is a God of purity and holiness and He actually hates some things. The book of Proverbs reveals some of God’s thoughts on this in these words, “There are six things the Lord hates, seven things that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community,” (Prov

GUARD YOUR HEART!

GUARD YOUR HEART! God’s Word says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it,” (Proverbs 4:23 NIV). Most of us spend a lot of time and money guarding our possessions. We put locks on our doors and windows and security systems in our homes. We have locks on our car doors and trunks and alarm systems to let us know if someone is breaking in. We pay money to have companies secure our personal and financial information and we pay money for programs to secure our computers and phones. And on it goes. Why? Because thieves of all kinds will break in and steal. But how much time and thought do we give to guarding our heart? If we do not guard our heart thieves will break

WHAT ARE YOU TRUSTING IN?

WHAT ARE YOU TRUSTING IN? That is an important question and yet people give it very little thought. Most people just seem to get up and go about “doing life” without giving it much thought. Maybe that is because by the time we really start to think about life our families, educational system, and culture have so impacted us that we just go about “doing life.” So it should not surprise us that for the most part Americans are impacted more by secularism than they are by biblical teachings. But God would remind us that education, the government, science, employment, people and all the other things we could name in this world will not provide for us the final answer to where we should place our

DILIGENT WORK PAYS OFF!

DILIGENT WORK PAYS OFF! At least in our relationship with God diligent work pays off; not so all the time with human employers or in all relationships. Proverbs 2:1-4 NIV reminds us that God said, “if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—indeed if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,” then certain things of value will happen. Your diligence will pay off. What will those things be? They will be things the world cannot give you. First on the result list is that “you will understand the fear of the Lord and fi

DON'T BE A FOOL!

DON’T BE A FOOL! King Solomon had a lot to say about a lot of things concerning life and eternity and God recorded them in the bible so they could be a help for all who read them and learn from them. In the beginning of this book of Proverbs Solomon gives the key to reading this book and also to gaining knowledge in all of life. He said, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction,” (Proverbs 1:7 NIV). Solomon is not talking about a shake in your boots fear of God; though many who rebel against God probably should be in that condition. Solomon is talking about a state of life where we humble ourselves before God with an affection and devotion

SIMPLE GUIDELINES FOR SIMPLE PEOPLE!

SIMPLE GUIDELINES FOR SIMPLE PEOPLE! I remember that after I became a Christian and started reading the bible on a regular basis, as opposed to seldom reading it before I became a Christian, that a thought struck me that I hope, should strike everyone. Thoughts have to “strike” me because I am kind of hard headed. That information is gleaned from my wife and family genes, but this thought did strike me; what I was reading in the bible was just common sense. After all if God is dealing with people who have had their entire being corrupted by the human race falling into sin He is going to have to make things pretty simple for most people to understand. Now this is not to say that they aren’t s

THE TREASURE CHEST OF JOY!

THE TREASURE CHEST OF JOY! Everyone it seems wants to be happy when the real need is to find joy. Happiness for most people seems to depend on circumstances, people, things, or a multitude of other things. I spent some time reading quotes on happiness from a lot of well-known people and what I found is that there is no common consent on what constitutes happiness. George Burns said, “Happiness is having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family in another city.” Daniel Boone said, “All you need for happiness is a good gun, a good horse, and a good wife.” Martha Washington said, “I am determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situation I may find myself. For I have learned that the gre

THE FRUIT CALLED JOY!

THE FRUIT CALLED JOY can only be found in one place. You can’t purchase it at any fruit stand, produce market or super market in the world. It is much too valuable to be sold there and no amount of money on earth could purchase it anyway. Now you have guessed by this time what I am talking about. I am talking about spiritual fruit called “Joy” that only God can provide and He doesn’t sell it. He gives it away but only to a certain class of people. I guess you would call that discrimination in our society but then God has different standards. The Apostle Paul said, “But the fruit of the Spirit is …joy…” (Galatians 5:22 NIV). Now there are other spiritual fruit listed in Paul’s statement but

THINKING AHEAD!

THINKING AHEAD! We often are so caught up in the present that we don’t take time to think about the future. It is also good to rehearse the past so we understand how we got to where we are in life and what in life has made us the way we are. In Psalm 16 David is doing some of these things and he concludes by stating, “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand,” (Psalm 16:11 NIV). It would be good to take time at the beginning of this New Year to take time to reflect on how we arrived at this point in life. Who have been the key players in our life? What have been the major events that have helped to shape me i

A YEAR OF HOPE!

A YEAR OF HOPE. There it is…the year is stretched out before us with all its challenges and aspirations. Some have made New Year resolutions and bucket lists. Others have begun to realize that unless something changes this year will look a lot like last year and that may be good or bad depending on how last year went. But one thing is sure. Unforeseen things will happen for better or for worse. We cannot control all facets of life. But as Christians we should enter this New Year with hope and trust in God. As King David said, “In you, Lord my God, I put my trust. I trust in you; do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me. No one who hopes in you will ever be put to sha

GOD'S BLESSINGS!

GOD’S BLESSINGS. I don’t know about you but I really do want God to bless me in this year and God’ Word tells me how that will be possible. The book of Psalms starts out with this advice, “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who mediates on his law day and night,” (Psalm 1:1-2 NIV). God’s blessings have a great deal to do with our time and people involvement. We can choose to invest most of our time with people who do not know God, practice ungodly things and literally mock God or we can follow God in ways that reflect His teachings from the Word o
