WHAT DID JESUS SAY? He said a lot when He was here on earth but one day when he was in the local synagogue at Nazareth where He had been brought up. He was handed “the scroll of the prophet Isaiah” to read. This is what the scroll said, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor,” (Luke 4:18-19 NIV). Jesus quit reading and sat down and then He said, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” I can imagine that at that time you could hear a pin drop in the synagogue. Jesus, i

TIMING IS EVERYTHING: “But when the set time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship,” (Galatians 4:4-5 NIV). God is not bound by human time settings in seconds, minutes, hours, days or years. God is always on time. Never late. Never early. God is always on time. Now sometimes I have wondered about that. Why now? Why not then? Why not later? And sometimes God reveals the answer to those questions and sometimes He doesn’t. But God is always on time. After all at this time in human history God is working in the lives of six billion plus people. And He is always on time. Don’t reflect too mu

DISTINGUISHING GIFTS FROM THE WRAPPINGS! Christmas morning and birthday parties with small children have a lot of similarities I believe. One thing I have noticed over the years is when the gifts are opened sometimes a child to whom the gift does not belong snatches the gift away from the child to whom it does belong. Chaos can begin and tears and cries may follow. But usually things get straightened out in the end. And sometimes kids just complain because they were expecting one thing and received another. And sometimes they get angry. And sometimes the names fall off the gift and then the fun begins trying to figure out who the gift belongs to. Sometimes two people receive the same kind o

HOW OLD WERE YOU? I am not sure exactly when I realized or discovered the true meaning of Christmas. I was not raised in a Christian home and very seldom was I inside a church. Christmas was more about Santa Claus than about Jesus. In our home the focus was on the Christmas tree and the gifts that began to appear under the tree and eventually on Christmas morning at least one major gift appeared for each person. Even though my parents were hard working people I am not sure how they managed that until my two older brothers and I eventually left home to serve in the military. I am sure it was easier for them at that time with the remaining kids at home. It was only after I accepted Jesus as my

SALUTE TO THE KING: “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen,” (1 Timothy 1:17 NIV). What is Christmas celebration if not a salute to the King who came to save us and give us eternal life? In this generation there has a been a renewal of how the public views those serving in the military and how important they are to keeping America safe from those who hate us and would destroy us. We salute them as do most Americans. But who deserves to be saluted more than Jesus our King who came that first Christmas day so that we could be saved from the devil and His intense hatred for God and all who would call on God’s name? As the troops ma

ANGELS AND SHEPHERDS. How far apart can two groups be? The dwellers of heavenly realms and messengers in God’s service and the dwellers of lonely places and lowly service would seem to be so far apart they would never meet. But it is just like our great God to bring them together the night Jesus was born. After all Jesus came to breech this great divide between a glorious God and sinful man. “And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified,” (Luke 2:8-9 NIV). Put yourself in their place, if you can, and you will understand not only ho

THE INDESCRIBABLE GIFT! Every year during the Christmas season we read of amazing gifts that people give to others. Food, clothing, houses, cars, medical help, transportation, money, and many other things that often border on extreme generosity are given out freely. Random acts of kindness are common and often costly as people sacrifice to help others. All the people and organizations acting in this manner are to be commended if they are acting with proper motives. In some way they are modeling after the Lord Jesus Christ who sacrificed so greatly to help us sinful creatures who desperately need help. But none of these gifts rise to the level of God’s great gift. The Apostle Paul in writing

PITCHING A TENT: The God who created the universe stepped out of His heavenly realm and pitched His tent in Bethlehem on that first Christmas morning. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made,” (John 1:1-3). This is what makes the following verse so remarkable, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth,” (John 1:14 NIV). Jesus is fully God and yet he became man, “took on flesh”. Jesus in his birth took on the full natu

CHRISTMAS GIFTS: OK I admit it I am terrible at buying Christmas gifts. First of all I am never sure what people want or really need. And I really don’t like shopping anyway. I make lists when I go to a store and it is usually in and out unless of course I get stuck in a check-out line behind people who always seem to have problems. And in the area where I live you always run the risk of being run over in the store by someone in an electric shopping cart. Now I am not a bah-humbug person and I love to give people gifts they really like and I am thankful for being able to shop on line. But I just do not have that gift insight like my daughter does. She buys multiple gifts for multiple people

CHILDREN: Most people consider children a blessing. And undoubtedly most of us consider our babies to be the most beautiful and wonderful babies that have ever been born. Until the grandbabies come and then the contest is on. Really now would you have it any other way? Children are a blessing from God though in our world today many fail to think that way and actually are willing to sacrifice them on the altar of expediency. But God gave all of mankind an exceptional child, the Lord Jesus Christ, God’s own Son. And what a child he turned out to be. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty G

ANTICIPATION: Almost no one gets more excited about the approaching event of Christmas day than children. All the activities prior to Christmas build up to a climax that causes such excitement they almost burst with excitement. Do you remember those days in your own life? And now in the lives of your children and possibly your grandchildren and possibly your great-grandchildren? And as Christians don’t we enjoy all the music, and church programs and special sermons. And we should not forget the dinners, socials, and family gatherings. And what about the gift giving? Don’t we love to give gifts and receive gifts? And I trust in all this we don’t lose Jesus in the Christmas wrappings. After al
