IT IS LARGE! It is estimated that the Service Industry in the U.S. accounts for more than 80 per cent of the private-sector employment or more than 90 million jobs. Service is big business when it comes to making money; however it doesn’t seem that most people are too interested in serving others if no money is involved. When you think about it Christians should be in the service business as well if we are to truly model Jesus. Jesus spoke to His disciples about serving others as part of true discipleship. He said, “whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and

SILENCE THE MESSENGERS! The attempts to suppress messengers and messages that certain people don’t want to hear is not something new and just occurring in our society or in our generation. We live in a time when a country that was founded on Judeo-Christian principles and held the bible in great esteem is now being assaulted by people who don’t believe the bible should be part of our public life. These same people want to suppress those who would proclaim their beliefs in the truths of the bible and also live those same truths out in their lives. At the same time these same people want to flaunt their perverted beliefs and suppress and persecute those who disagree with them. Far too many Chr

THE CORNERSTONE OF SALVATION! When called before the rulers and elders of Israel to explain why and how he healed a lame man the Apostle Peter included this statement in his remarks, "Jesus is ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’ Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved,” (Acts 4:11-12 NIV). Peter is clear on the subject of salvation (forgiveness of sin and a personal relationship with God). There is only ONE way to obtain God's free gift of salvation and that is through the work of the Lord Jesus Christ. A cornerstone is literally a stone at the corner of a building that is the funda

YOU MUST DEAL WITH IT! Whether we are Christians or non-Christians we need to deal with our sin in order to find refreshing of our soul. The Apostle Peter in his great sermon revealed to us in Acts chapter 3 said this, "Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord," (Acts 3:19 NIV). Non-Christian people are looking for refreshment of their soul but they tend to look in all the wrong places; mainly to the multitude of religious systems created by mankind. True refreshment of our soul can only come from God because only He can deal with our sins through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. “Everyone who calls on the name of the L

A Sweet Beginning! The beginning of things is often so much simpler and sweeter than what they often morph in to. When we read about the beginning of Christ's Church and then look at many local churches today we often wonder if we have not lost our way. Think about this as you read this passage from the book of Acts and reflect on how we as Christians and local churches might need to adjust our lifestyle and worship. When thousands of people accepted Jesus as their Savior following a tremendous sermon by the Apostle Peter they were immediately added to the numbers of the church and joined them as described in the following verses. "They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to f

A WITNESS TO THE WORLD! After His resurrection and just before Jesus ascended into heaven He said to the Apostles, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth,” (Acts 1:8 NIV). The Bible, when read in its completeness, is clear that this command/statement applies to His church and individual Christians down through the ages. We cannot escape the implications of this command/statement on our own lives. If we are really "born again" we have the Holy Spirit and His power living in us. We have the ability to do what God wants us to do. We WILL be a witness concerning God;

WHY THESE MIRACLES? Why does the Gospel of John record some miracles of Jesus but not all of them? And why does the Apostle John choose these miracles and not others to record for us? And what effect should a reading of these miracles have on us? And have you been affected by your reading of John's Gospel? John explains this for us. "Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name,”(Gospel of John 20:30-31NIV). The Apostle John makes it clear that the miracles performed by Jesus in the changing of wat

FEAR OVERCOME! Fear can do many things to a person. It can freeze you into place so that you are afraid to move or fear can motivate you to do heroic or seemingly impossible things. Fear can reveal character or it can destroy character. When Jesus was taken to the cross His disciples headed for a hiding place. After Jesus rose from the grave He found His group of scared Apostles hiding out in a room with the doors locked. They were fearful people, confused and defeated. What Jesus said to them brought relief and utter amazement to them in body, soul and spirit. The Apostles were fearful, probably more than they had ever been in their lives. These men who had experienced feats in their life t

WHAT A SURPRISE! How well do you respond to things that take you totally by surprise? I guess that depends on what it is that surprises you? There are surprises and then there are SURPRISES!!! Think back with me for a moment about that first resurrection morning when Jesus rose and came out of the tomb. I wonder about Christians sometimes, myself included, and how our response would have been if we were among the first to see the resurrected Lord. SURPRISE!! Would we have been excited and would we have rushed out to tell others? Or would we have been in a shaken and quaking condition and kept the news to ourselves? After all one could be looked at as being askew and unbalanced in reporting t

WHERE ARE YOU LOOKING FOR LOVE? Many people today feel that they are unloved and unlovely and isolated and alone in an unloving world. The Devil has laid many traps for those people who go looking for love in all the wrong places and he can make the avenue to love very attractive. The old TV show “Cheers” made it seem like you could find all the right, kind, loving and accepting relationships in the local neighborhood bar. Many TV programs have followed this format in a variety of ways to promote how all kinds of people can find love and acceptance in an unloving world. Social media is another area where commercialism has been used to lead people down the primrose path of disaster in order t

AH! SIMPLICITY IN LIFE! Don’t we all say we like or would like to have simplicity in life? It seems like life is so complicated today. When buying a cup of coffee you are faced with endless choices. The same with autos, mattresses, sheets, underwear, or socks. Even light bulbs or TV channels offer a challenge. May God have mercy on your soul if you go to the breakfast cereal aisle in a grocery store or even attempt to purchase a bottle of milk. In the produce section the varieties of apples are endless. I yearn for simplicity in life. For my simple questions I like simple answers. Just straight forward answers will do. I don’t need political correctness nor will I think a person is racist if

HEART TROUBLE! Do you have a troubled heart? It seems easy for that to happen in today's troubled world. But Jesus provides encouragement for Christians with promises that cover the present and the future. Jesus tells us in His Word that we need to remember that planet earth is not our ultimate destination and troubles are not a permanent state of affairs. Yes we are residents of the earthly realm but we need to remember that, “our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,” (Philippians 3:20 NIV). We are passing through life on earth to reach our ultimate home and place of joy. But our trip through life should not be focused on troubles but o

WHERE IS THE LOVE? We are fifteen months from the next Presidential election and the debates have started on the Democratic side to see who will be their candidate for President. I must say that the way they talk about each other in the debates is often very unkind and certainly does not express love toward one another. Maybe that is what we have come to expect in American politics. All this leads me to think about how we Christians think and talk about each other when we have different ideas and views on life and often the Bible. The non-Christians often have a hard time understanding Christians. Christians often divide into little camps (almost like Democrats & Republicans) and hurl insult
