ETERNAL LIFE! Were there ever two words that could stir up more controversy and opinions than those two words? Some scoff at the very thought that there is such a thing. Some people think maybe there is the possibility but they are not sure how it could come about. Many people have invented or devised their own spiritual belief system on the topic. Organized religious systems abound around the world based on the belief of eternal life or the possibility of eternal life. Sincere people are often led astray because of cultic figures who manipulate them and charlatans abound who toss about imagined paths to achieve eternal life but they really are all about gaining material wealth at your expen

STRESS! It is talked about much these days but really what is it? A common definition is that stress is “a state of mental or emotional stain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances.” Someone has said, “I stress about stress before there’s even stress to stress about.” I think that might well define many people in America today. It seems too many people think their job is just too stressful so they are continually looking for something less stressful or are too occupied with attempting to make it less stressful and in the process make it even more stressful. Oscar Wilde said in regards to stress and jobs, “The best way to appreciate your job is to imagine yourself

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF WE TRIED THIS AS A SOCIETY? “Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate, and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing, (1 Peter 3:8-9 NIV). Can you imagine what would happen if members of Congress acted that way toward one another? Or if that conduct was exhibited during political debates? Or if business matters were handled that way on a daily basis? Since Peter was writing these verses to Christians can you imagine what it would be like if Christians treated each other this way or even if our Christian fa

OLD WORDS MEET REAL NEEDS TODAY! We live in an era of unprecedented communication systems and new ones seem to arrive almost every day. Never have so many wanted to say so much that amounts to so little. It is a wonder to me that our eyes and ears function so well for so long as they are bombarded by so much on a regular basis. And one would think that while all that is conveyed in so short a time for such a long period of time that our brains would simply burn out from overload. And I think for some it has happened. How so many supposed bright and intelligent people can be on the airwaves twenty-four hours a day professing to fill us with knowledge can be so ignorant themselves of real fac

SHOW YOURSELF A MAN! When you hear those words what flashes to your mind? Maybe men think one thing and women another. What would a “real man’s man” mean when he says those words? Let’s ask King David, a real man’s man, who had all the problems in life that anyone would ever want to endure and yet he was a man after God’s own heart. From a shepherd boy to a giant killer, to a leader of the King’s army and finally he became the King himself. David was a great and mighty shepherd, a leader of men, a warrior, a musician, and a man with all the passions that men have. So as David comes to the end of his life it is interesting what he tells his son about being a man. He doesn’t give him a lecture

ON MY DESK! It sat on my office desk for years. I put it there when I entered full-time Christian service as a Youth Pastor. As I was pursuing a college and seminary education I had never really thought about being a Youth Pastor but here I was beginning a life-time of service to God and His Church as a Youth Pastor. It was a good experience but I am thankful and I am sure generations of teens are thankful that God in a few years moved me on to being a common everyday Pastor. At that time I found my office desk hidden away in what used to be called the Choir room; a small room with a window, an outside door an entrance to the baptismal pool and another door that led to a walkway to another r

LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE ON! It is my personal opinion of course but I think it is true of the LGBTQ believers and promoters down through the ages and those living today that they are dumb as rocks. I think most of them cannot read because it appears they have never read the most famous book in the world or if they have read it they scoff at the infallible writer of the book and accept the fiction of fallible men. The reason I think they must be dumb as a rock is because even children can read the infallible book and know the difference between that book and the fiction shared by other people. Just one verse in the bible destroys the entire thesis of the LGBTQ believers, “So God created mankind

CHALLENGES? Yes, I have challenges in my life. I can’t remember a time that I never had challenges present with me. Some may think that strange but I don’t. I come from a generation and a life environment that was very challenging and those challenges were accepted as just a normal part of life. Challenges did not stop when I entered the military or got married or when we had children. In fact challenges in life seemed to increase at that time. When I became a Christian some challenges became even more difficult but the new birth in Jesus gave me more resources with which to face the challenges. I noticed also that when God called me and my family into full-time vocational Christian service

FAILURE! Some people go through life consumed by the fear of failure. Winston Churchill said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” The great country music singer Johnny Cash had a philosophy about failure worth thinking about. He said, “You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don’t try to forget the mistakes, but you don’t dwell on it. You don’t let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.” The Preacher Jack Hyles said, “Success is on the same road as failure; success is just a little further down the road.” Zig Ziglar the popular motivational speaker said, “Failure

THE RIGHT REASONS! Why do we do what we do? Sometimes we do things for the wrong reasons and later we are sorry we did. Sometimes it is hard to discern what is or is not the right reason to do something. Sometimes we do things because we feel pressured into it and then we discover that we made a big mistake. Life can be complicated and our reasoning processes sometimes can become clouded by our emotions. Even the reasons why the Church ministers in certain ways must be evaluated and questioned as to why we do things the way we do and what are the reasons for continuing in our practices. I like how the Apostle Paul described the new church in Thessalonica and their reasons for doing what they

HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL! Books on Success are big sellers in today’s market. There is even a magazine called “SUCCESS.” The magazine gives a list of the 25 must-read books on success. One statement they make should cause one to think about success overall. It is that one should take “a comprehensive approach to money, life and personal development because we know that one-dimensional success really isn’t success at all.” Warren Buffett says you will be helped to success if you read about 500 pages of the right material each day. Bill Gates reads about 50 books per year. Mark Cuban reads more than 3 hours each day. “A study of 1,200 wealthy people found that they all have reading as a pastime in

THANKFULNESS! Is it just me or does it seem that people are less thankful for what others do for them today? There just seems to be an expectation on the part of many that everything is due them and that everything is about them. The words “thank you” just don’t seem to be in the vocabulary of many people today. And I have noticed that even in third-world countries people often develop an attitude of expectation when helped and soon adopt an attitude of expectation instead of an attitude of thankfulness. Sometimes when people enter the United States illegally they enter not with an attitude of being thankful for being here but with an attitude that they are “owed” all things that are availab

TRUST! It seems we live in a world of distrust today. There is distrust between the politicians we send to Washington to work together to further and enhance the lives of the American people. There is distrust between the leaders of the nations of the world. Almost everything you buy comes with a warranty today but most people don’t trust the warranties because of the fine print that you can’t read with a magnifying glass or because they have had a bad experience with a warranty before. When I entered primary school back in the dark ages the teachers were trusted to give me a good education, teach morals, ethics, good conduct, and a love for our country. Today people have a hard time trustin

HI HO! HI HO! IT IS OFF TO WORK WE GO! Yes it is Monday and for most of those still in their working years in pre-retirement it is time to start another work week. Yes I know that in America today large percentages of people work on weekends as well so their workweek is different. Workweek may be an outdated term as “a week” for many people is often just days or even hours. And “work” is certainly a relative term. What a person gets paid for is sometimes more fun than work. Sometimes work does not seem like work because a person enjoys it so much. But for most people work is there just to provide the funds for the expenses of life and maybe some pleasures as well. It is great when work can p

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY! Yes it is Father’s Day in America and it was not easy to make it an official National holiday. The roots of this day are bound up in nearly six decades of local celebrations that were started and stopped and discussed and proposed. I guess honoring the position of Father in the family wasn’t nearly important as honoring the position of Mother. But finally after six decades President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring Fathers in 1966. The third Sunday in June was designated as Father’s Day. President Richard Nixon made Father’s Day a permanent national holiday when he signed it into law in 1972. So today is the day and we hope Father gets

OPPORTUNITIES! Too many people today are looking for life to be “handed to them on a silver platter” as the old saying goes. Maybe nothing could be worse for a person than to experience that kind of life. When a person doesn’t have to work to earn their way in this world I think they miss a lot of the lessons of life that God would desire for us to learn in a “common” community. Even children of middle-class people in America today are often so pampered and spoiled that they have never learned the value of work nor to sacrifice to achieve what is really of true value in life. Relationships and “careers” are destroyed because they demand too much effort to maintain or improve. After all isn’t

REST FOR OUR SOULS AND A NATION! It seems we live in a nation of turmoil today whether it is in our personal lives or in the life of our nation. There seems to be people or groups of people who continually attempt to “keep the pot boiling” and attempting to keep unrest and ungodly change on the move in America. From “Drag Queens” appearing in public libraries to push their agendas to ungodly “sex education” in public primary schools the Satanic attacks on our children continue. One of the biggest attacks on American society today is led by liberal politicians seeking to push their agendas to destroy the foundations of our society and replace the foundations with socialistic principles includ

EMERGENCY ROOM! It was a serious time and the patient was very impatient, confused, yet nosey and checking every person who walked by. It is not easy when your head is inches from the floor and you have to look up to see every person and the surroundings are new and different. This patient had the bloodshot eyes of an alcoholic who have been on a binge for several weeks and he was very lethargic but at the moment he was aroused by the situation of being in the emergency room. Chuck, my son’s 14 year old Dachshund, was not feeling well and we were all very concerned about this condition that arose quite suddenly. Chuck had allergy symptoms before but this was something we had never seen befor

WHEN THE STORMS ROLL THROUGH! For the last several days we have had some severe storms rolling through the area where I live. It is not unusual here in South Florida in the summer to have afternoon storms complete with wind, rain, thunder and lightning to visit us and give a visual reminder of the power of nature and the dangers we experience in life. The sky grows so dark you almost forget it is actually in the middle of the day and the rain is coming down so hard you can barely see out the windows. The thunder roars, sudden flashes of lightening streak across the sky, and often the electrical power is momentarily interrupted and a chorus of digital signals begin to chirp their song. Then a

TWINS AND MATCHING SETS!I have known a number of people in this world who were actually part of a set of twins; if that is the way you describe it. Some sets were males, some females, and some sets consisted of a brother and sister. I think you know what I mean. Twins also come in items such as salt & pepper shakers, shoes, socks, and animals. There are also things we would call matching sets. They are not twins but they appear so often together that you almost never see one without the other. The bible speaks of those matching sets as well. Two of those things are “grace and peace.” The Apostles spoke often of these things, Peter said, “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge
