HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL THE MOMS EVERYWHERE! Yes, we do wish you a happy day though we know the circumstances of life and the new life you brought into the world often prevent the reality of our wishes. Mothers deserve all the praise and joy we can bring into their lives. After all we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for our mothers and their long nine month labor of love carrying us around inside the womb. And when we finally arrived kicking and screaming into the reality of being examined and gawked at by a bunch of strangers, who was there to cuddle, love and feed us but dear old Mom? We know most Moms are not perfect but when you consider what God has given them to work with in the form o

AN IMPORTANT QUESTION! There are a lot of important questions that confront us when we read the Bible. In fact when we live our daily lives we are confronted with an endless array of important questions. Some questions we choose to ignore and usually to our own detriment. Other questions that face us on a daily basis we must answer immediately or we will not be around long enough to face any more questions. As a Christian who has lived for a “few” years I believe I am not alone when I say there has been a definite deterioration in the very fabric of our society. Like many other Christians I believe our governmental, educational, and religious leaders are very often the cause of this deterior

HOW MUCH IS A GOOD MOM WORTH? Maybe you think your Mother is the best Mom that ever existed or maybe you are a person who was abused by your Mother. Or maybe you are somewhere in between. The writer of the book of Proverbs had an interesting question for us to consider. He asked, “A wife of noble character who can find?” His answer should give us pause to think as he said, “She is worth far more than rubies.” Both of those quotes are from Proverbs 31:10 NIV. The writer goes on to describe the actions and lifestyle of this valuable wife and mother. I think by the time most women have read the verses that follow verse 10 they are exhausted just thinking about all the activity described and att

STANDING FIRM AMID CHANGE! Life is full of changes and if we don’t adapt to those changes we will miss some of life’s greatest joys, challenges and opportunities. One of the problems we have as Christians is how to maintain our biblical beliefs and standards in an increasingly ungodly world. This is not a new problem since our fellow Christians in the early church faced the problem and ended up becoming meals for hungry lions in some local arena. Sometimes you just have to stand your ground in face of all opposition to your biblical beliefs and just suffer the consequences. Our Christian biblical beliefs are under attack in America on every side at this time from: Congress, State and local g

TOO MUCH IDLE TIME! I have come to the conclusion that some people have too much time on their hands in which to do nothing so they waste it on doing things that are bottom line doing nothing worth anything at all. Face book posts are a good example of that both in photos and written content. Politicians are a good example of this also. They take “junkets” all over the world yet can’t pass any useful legislation. I think many Preachers fit into this classification. Some of them should spend more time studying the Word of God and praying and less time playing golf and involving themselves in other forms of recreation. Maybe helping the poor, the homeless, and other hurting people of this wo

IS SLEEP OVERRATED? I don’t know if sleep is overrated or not. I have never had enough of it to make a judgment call on that topic. It seems the experts tell us that we need eight hours of sleep each twenty-four hours in order to maintain a healthy body. If you want to irritate parents with a new born baby just tell them that fact or maybe tell a parent with a sick child. Try telling that to an older person with many aches and pains or someone with an injured body part. I have noticed that teenagers seem to get much more sleep than supposedly required while their parents seem to run a deficit of the sleep needed. Sometimes I wonder if some of our government workers aren’t adding to their req

SWEET TEA! I am from the South and I really like sweet tea. I don’t just drink it to quench my thirst but I really do enjoy a glass of ice cold sweet tea. You have to have ice not just tea. I went to the store the other day to replenish my supply and would you know they only had unsweetened tea. As I frantically searched through that cooler for sweet tea I discovered that all they had was unsweetened tea. Now, what kind of a store in the South runs out of sweet tea and then fills their cooler with unsweetened tea? No real Southerner drinks unsweetened tea unless in a real weakened condition. All this led me to ask, “How much sugar am I getting in a glass of sweet tea?” This led me to discove

BIRTHDAYS! Last evening my wife and I along with our daughter celebrated our son’s birthday and our son-in-law’s birthday. Just for the fun of it we took the two birthday boys along with us. Of course the birthday boys aren’t boys anymore they are mature middle-aged men and of course it was not really their birthdays. Because the locations where we live are separated by many miles we used this time together to celebrate these two birthdays of these important people in our lives. Usually when our extended family consisting of parents, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren are together conversation among the five of us who ate dinner together last night is severally hampered. In light of that t

SAD BUT THANKFUL! I received news recently that two of the young men that our missionary ministry teams had opportunity to minister to in Haiti have died. One of them was a former child resident at the orphanage we support in Haiti. Rolex, as he was known, and three of his siblings came to the orphanage about ten years ago and his sister is still a resident at the orphanage. Rolex was a really likeable boy and young man. He had a great sense of humor, was a willing worker when encouraged, hung out with our ministry teams, took care of his siblings, and as a young man went to work doing what he could to support a wife and baby. Rolex had his problems but I really liked Rolex and was really sa

STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES! This phrase from Forrest Gump is certainly true; at least I think so. And nobody does stupid like some of the members of our United States Congress. I was born and raised in Tennessee though I haven’t lived there since I was twenty-two years old. I love the people and the State of Tennessee, especially those in East Tennessee and I have a lot of friends and family there. I am embarrassed for those in Tennessee who saw recently, very recently, one of their United States Congressional Representatives sitting in a congressional committee meeting, that was being televised, chomping down on Kentucky Fried Chicken and clutching a fake chicken and berating the Attorney Ge

GRAVE MARKERS! Yesterday, my extended family and I were in an awe-inspiring cemetery to hold a memorial service for my son-in-law’s mother. The place was the South Florida National Cemetery which is a cemetery serving the veterans who have honorably served our nation in branches of our United States military. My son-in-law’s father had served in both the Navy and Air Force during WW2, Korea, and Viet Nam. He retired from the Air Force Reserve. He died two years ago and now his wife’s body would be residing in the same grave with him. It seemed fitting as they were married for sixty-five years. As I looked around the beautiful grounds of this cemetery and saw row after neat row of grave marke

KEEPING FOCUS! Sometimes it is possible to lose focus on what is really important in life. Death often brings life back into focus on what is really important. Sickness often makes us realize what it really means to be healthy. The simplicity of children often shows us that we may be taking ourselves too seriously. The political area in America often causes people to lose focus on how neighbors should love others as they love themselves. Sometimes in the circles of Christianity we lose focus on where the real battleground for the souls of people really lies and we end up fighting each other instead of the real enemy. The Apostle Paul said, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, bu
