VALENTINE’S DAY! Wikipedia shares with us that “Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on February 14.” They also let us know that the day started as a “Western Christian feast day honoring one or two early saints named Valentinus.” It is also “recognized as a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and romantic love in many regions around the world, although it is not a public holiday in any country.” There is more to the history and we are told, “Saint Valentine’s Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion and the Lutheran Church. Many parts of the Eastern Orthodox Church also cel

FORGOTTEN? SELF-ABSORBED? SAD? PRAYING BUT NO ANSWERS FROM GOD? MOCKED BY UNBELIEVERS? That was King David as revealed in Psalm 13:1-4 and that may be you today. So you are not the first to feel this way and you won’t be the last. But there is an answer to your situation. David found the answer and he shares it with us. David looked inward despite his feelings, questions, sadness, prayers, and mockery by others and this is what he concluded, “But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been good to me,” (Palm 13:5-6 NIV). There are times when all of us feel and act like King David. Life is not always easy. Life does not a

TIME! Yesterday I shared how a thief stole my license plate from my auto while it sat on the church parking lot while I attended a church worship service. There is a process that follows such an event that the owner of the car must go through. I discovered that not only did the thief steal my license plate he also stole a lot of people’s time including mine. First I had to fill out a form to take with me to the Department of Motor Vehicles to explain my dilemma. I did this on line. Then I tried to file a police report on line on the police website but after filling out the form on Sunday night the site informed me they had technical difficulties and to try later. I tried later on Monday mor

Thief! There are thieves everywhere in life. If you have been breathing very long you realize that is a true statement. I have been the victim of many thieves of real property and emotional and mental properties. But yesterday was a first for me. Someone stole my personalized license plate from my auto as the car was parked on a church parking lot during a worship service. I don’t know whether they have a grudge against the Marine Corps, against me personally or whether they just wanted a plate to put on a wall at home or maybe on a stolen car. At least they left me the screws with which to attach the new license plate I will need to get today. And the Pastor of the church was very distraugh

PRAISE OR QUESTION? We should praise God all the time but sometimes we have questions for God; at least I do and certainly the Psalmist did. In Psalm 9 King David said, “I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your name, O most high,” (Psalm 9:1-2 NIV). There are times in life when all we can do is thank and praise God and consider all that He has done for us and with us and then just rejoice in Him. In those moments we are amazed at how great God is. The Board of Directors of Caribbean Vision Ministries took such a moment yesterday for each to share God’s one, or some, of God’s

WHAT IS TRUE AND PROPER WORSHIP? IT IS BEING SACRIFICED ALIVE! That's what God wants us to sacrifices. God wants people who live holy lives and please God in our service to Him. The Bible says,"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is —his good, pleasing and perfect will," (Romans 12:1-2 NIV). In order to become a living sacrifice we must become a non-conformist in relation to the patterns and

A VOICE FROM THE PAST. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the present that we forget the great people who went before us and paved the way for the future. That is evident in many in the political arena today and also in the Christian community. But God does not change and His care for us in all generations is certain. One voice from the past comes to us from James Hudson Taylor, a British Protestant Christian missionary who spent 51 years in China who was primarily responsible for bringing hundreds of missionaries to China, starting over a hundred schools, hundreds of places for the gospel to be preached and in at least 18,000 conversions to Christ. And his influence is still being felt today

PAIN! There is a lot of pain in this world. In my years as a local church Pastor I observed it on a lot of levels in a lot of areas such as physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Pain often reminds us that something is wrong and that we need to deal with it. Yesterday I was in a hospital outpatient waiting room and recovery room for about eight hours because I was assisting a family member. There was a lot of pain in both those places. As I observed the many people who came and went during this day it was obvious many of them were in pain in many ways; some as patients and some who were assisting them. It was also interesting to watch those who worked for the hospital such as doctors, nu

A RIGHT START! How things begin often determine how they end. If a person or a horse stumbles at the beginning of a race the outcome probably isn’t going to be good. By God’s grace even bad starts in life can end well because God is the God of the impossible. The way we start our day will often determine how our day goes. It is a tough world out there and we need all the help we can get to go through the day and finish it well. King David of Israel faced tough things each day, enemies who “were out to get him,” much like Satan places things in our pathway each day to cause us pain and failure. But a right start each day will help us tremendously. King David gave us a good principle that will

GUARD YOUR HEART! The heart is vital to life and living and the care of it is a huge part of the medical profession today. Doctors, medication, clinics, diets, and on it goes. If it stops permanently beating you are dead. We have a machine beside our bed that constantly monitors my wife’s heart. If her heart acts abnormal in any way it sends a signal to a machine in the doctor’s office so they can keep track of her physical wellbeing. Now we are not sure whether this is needed or not and she evidently has never had any episodes that are cause for alarm. In the bible the heart is often referred to not as the heart organ that is so vital physically but rather as that part of you from which all

THE GOLDEN RULE! You may have learned “the golden rule” as a child and not even realized that Jesus was the author of the rule. In fact Jesus pretty well summed up the Old Testament in sharing this “rule” with us. Here is the way He stated it, “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets,” (Matthew 7:12 NIV). You may have heard the “rule” simply stated, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” So simple. So hard to do. And often misquoted in a lot of perverted ways. It is amazing that out of all Jesus said in the Sermon On The Mount in chapters 5-7 of the Gospel of Matthew this may be the one verse that people remember

QUESTIONS? I don’t know about you but I have a lot of questions for God and it seems like God is not always interested in answering my questions. Well, God is God and He can do what He likes. After Jesus was resurrected and spent some time with the Apostles they had a great question for Jesus. “They gathered around him and asked him, ‘Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?’ (Acts 1:6 NIV). That seemed like a logical question since Jesus had taught them a lot about a future kingdom and the fact that Jesus would be in charge of the Kingdom and they would rule and reign with Him. I think most Christians have a lot of questions for God and to most of us those questio

LET US START AT THE BEGINNING! Today it seems that a lot of people, most people maybe, don’t care a thing about history. It appears they only care about the present and not how they arrived at the place where they are today. Maybe that is why so many have a desire to destroy statutes, memorials, and historical items as if when those things are destroyed the past and all knowledge of it would be eliminated. And some seem to think if you can eliminate the Bible from schools on the primary, secondary, and college and university level then God himself would be eliminated; or at least any knowledge of Him. A great philosopher once said, “Stupid is as stupid does.” If one assumes that to be true
