RELATIONSHIPS IN A HURTING WORLD! The Apostle Peter in commenting on the Christian’s general conduct in societal and personal relationships said, “Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing,” (1Peter 3:8-9 NIV). Life would be grand if everyone followed these simple “rules of the road.” All Christians should seek the mind of Christ, which will bring us as Christians into like-mindedness, so we can live and work together in harmony. This does not mean we are cookie-cutter Christ

THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN OR HAVE THEY? A few days ago the people of Florida spoke in an election by casting their ballots so on November 7 I had a post titled, “The People Have Spoken!” and what our reaction to that should be. Little did I know at the time that while the people of Florida had spoken the people responsible for counting the votes in two of our counties appear to be either incompetent, dishonest, unlawful, careless, lazy or all of these things. While all the other counties in Florida could follow the laws of the State of Florida and do their job in spite of a hurricane and record turnouts for the election these two counties have failed miserly and produced chaos in the lives of c

VETERANS! Today we mark a special day in America as we honor all those who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States and in doing so we honor those who are serving at the present time as well. It is estimated that the total number of Americans killed in all U.S. wars is more than 1.1 million. These men and women sacrificed their lives in order for each of us to enjoy the freedoms and privileges we have in America today. All Veterans have sacrificed in one way or another in the service of their country but you seldom hear them complain about it. Most would say they made the right decision in joining the military whether it was being drafted, prior to an all-volunteer military, or j

PATIENCE! We live in an instant society. We want everything within minutes. Fame, fortune, position, education, food, drink, news, information, and service of any and all kinds must be instant. Every moment of every day needs to be packed with activity. Patience does not seem to be a virtue in our society. It appears that even many church services must be instant and timed to the split second and people moved on out the door. Is it any wonder that so few people have really developed deep and long lasting relationships with other people? And is it any wonder that we can live next door to someone for years and yet know so little about them? Even the body of Christ, the Church, seems at times t

TOMORROW! How often we use those words. They slip out so casually, so easily, often without thinking. Tomorrow I will cut the grass, clean the house, send that text or email, tell someone I love them, or make plans for the future. But in the book of James God reminds us of the lack of certainty concerning tomorrow. “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” (James 4:14) At times in Haiti I have sat on the roof of Grace Theological Institute early in the morning and watched the rising sun burn off the mist that spread out across the fields surrounding us. It was there and beautiful at that time of

JOURNALISTIC QUESTIONS! Are truth and demonstrating respect for others dying practices in journalism in America? Has making news concerning one’s self become the object of journalism in America instead of just reporting the news events as they have happened? Has coloring the truth to make one’s own opinions heard instead of just stating the facts and opinions of others become the object of “news” reports? Has outright lying about others and what they actually said now just a common practice in journalism in America? Have journalists stopped calling out their peers who are running awry in their profession or do they just accept them as part of the journalistic “herd?” Is true journalism dead

THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN! I don’t think anyone got everything they wanted, whether on the Local or National level, in the election completed yesterday. Life moves on and adjustments will be made. Some adjustments will be good and some will be bad depending on your perspective. As Christians we should continue to pray “for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good and pleases God our Savior,” (1 Timothy 2:1-3 NIV). The big picture for the Christian should involve more than just elections and politics in our locale and in our country. We have a mandate from the one who should really be the focal point of

LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD! We often complain in America that nobody listens to us and it certainly seems that way very often. Some people are so busy thinking about what they will say next that they don’t listen to what we are saying to them as we stand in front of them. TV commenters are bad about that in conversations they have on air and I have noticed the reporters in the White House are bad about that. They often ask the same question that was just answered by the White House Staff person. And in the General Election of 2016 it seems that many people in America did not hear the voice of the American people and accept the results of the election. And many people over the years have gotten

VOTING YOUR VALUES! This past week-end Millie and I cast our votes in the 2018 mid-term election. Early voting is a big help to many people whether one goes in person or submits their ballot by mail. Voting in America is a privilege God has allowed us to have in America and I believe it is critical that every person participates in the process and that every Christian should vote their Christian values. The Bible says, “When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan,” (Proverbs 29:2 NIV). The election this year for the most part, whether local, State or National, offers clear choices between values in life. People who call themselves Christians should v

WELCOME TO TIME CHANGE SUNDAY! My body did not understand it was supposed to sleep an hour longer today so here I am with an extra hour to do something today. But I have to be quiet because the others in the house obviously got the word and continue to sleep. Life is not fair sometimes but then I have known that since the time I was born and some guy slapped me on the behind and made me cry; honestly I had not done anything to him. So here I am in my later years in life and quite frankly I am tired of people complaining about how unfair life is and how life is abusing them so we must have elections so we can vote people into office who will give us everything that life has unfairly denied us

SPECIAL DAYS! November is full of special days. We have a special day this week. Sunday at 2:00AM we turn our clocks back one hour, try getting an extra hour of sleep, and get back on Standard Time, whatever that is. I think mainly it means more darkness awaits us. With fewer farmers these days I am not sure of the value of all these changes. We also celebrate the birthday of the United States Marine Corps on November 10 as we remember on that day in 1775 the Continental Marines were established by the Second Continental Congress. Tun Tavern, in Philadelphia, PA is regarded as the birthplace of the Marine Corps. On November 10, 1958, as a seventeen year old young man, I graduated from “boot

BLESSED! Our home was a full and busy place last night as it was filled with laughter, joy, sounds of a baby boy, and a three-year old girl, friends, family and a loving dog. And what would such a gathering be without food of some kind? After five months of hospitalization and near death experience, rehab, and home health care in recovering it was good to see Millie moving about, enjoying the experience, laughing and excited about life. God is good and it is always good to recognize His blessings wherever and whenever they appear. We are thankful when God blesses us with friends who travel from afar to be a blessing to us. We are also thankful when grandchildren take time from their busy liv

HOW ABOUT A LITTLE LIGHT? What a political season we are in this year! Politicians are slugging it out in a divided country. Caravans of people from Central American countries, formed and paid for by destructive political forces, are marching toward our borders demanding to be allowed to live in the United States and determined to enter even if they break our laws to get in. Former political leaders, who failed our country miserably while in office, are traveling the U.S. attempting to stir up trouble for those in office now and for those seeking to obtain positions of leadership. At the same time many of these people are advocating violence. And many politicians are working hard to “muddy t
