DIVISION! There are those living among us who thrive on division. In fact they work very hard to make sure that there is constant division among the citizens of this country. In doing so they seek to obtain positons of power and honor and often obtain pathways to wealth. If these people did not seek to belittle, humiliate, cast dispersion, and stir up dissension they would probably have no place in society that satisfies their ego. They promote themes like: black power, white power, segregation into groups of races, languages, sexes, colors and religion. Each person of division is seeking promotion of one of more of those groups in contrast to the other groups. The more groups the better the

GOD’S WORD VS MAN’S WORD. As this mid-term political season rushes to a close it will bring joy for some and sadness for others. Thankfully it may bring an end to the endless flow of man’s rhetoric for a short time and let us rest our ears; but I have my doubts as twenty-four hour news fills the airways. I am reminded at this time of the big difference between the endless and often valueless and disparaging words of those around us and the words of God. “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creat

FRIENDS! Millie and I spent most of yesterday enjoying the company of friends, two couples, who are in Delray Beach enjoying the warmth, beauty and beaches of South Florida. We have all been friends for forty-five years; relationships that began in the beginning days of our first Pastoral ministry. In the course of those years we have spent times together that included joy & sadness, victories & defeats, the progression in life of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. We have spent times of worship, ministry, vacations and mission trips together. Millie and I count ourselves fortunate to have these two couples as friends and count them as part of our family. We look forward to th

QUESTIONS? There are some questions in life that don’t get answered to our satisfaction. Why does a person mail bombs to political enemies? Why does a person go to a synagogue and murder eleven people? Why does a person walk into a school and murder innocent children? Most of us will never be satisfied with the answers given to us in those cases. Some questions in life are just annoying. Some are unnecessary. Some are really important like, “If I drink this will it really kill me?” The answer to some questions is self-evident and can affect us for eternity. In the bible book of Hebrews we have a really great and important question and how we respond to it does affect us for eternity. “How

CAUGHT! It appears the Mail Bomber has been caught so the politicians have returned to “business as usual” and have started blaming each other for pushing the “bomber” over the edge and causing his actions. We have really reached a low point in American society. As hordes of people described as a “caravan”, “mob”, “immigrants”, and a host of other names relentlessly move toward our Southern border and a confrontation with the Security personnel assigned to control the legal entry of people into this country hysteria reigns for many people. I once thought that the United States was a country of laws and most people were law-abiding citizens but it now appears our laws only apply to people if

FEAR! There are people in the United States and other nations of the world who try to make us live in fear in every area of our lives. They make threats, send bombs or chemical agents, through the mail to public figures & government offices and even plant bombs among crowds in public places. Often people are injured or killed so all threats must be taken seriously and these threats must always be condemned. Our world is a place where Satan is active and the sinful human heart is fertile ground for his active sowing of hatred toward others. This often produces violence by the person against other human beings who may be in disagreement with the person with a heart of hatred. This reaction can

GREAT THOUGHT FOR TODAY! I don’t know about you but my mind is getting fatigued. Twenty-four hours a day it is bitter politics, poison letters, pipe bombs in mail, hatred, lying people, hate TV, hurricanes, and floods. How about a great thought for the day? SALVATION! It is something great to think about today. Our GOD, our heavenly Father, is kind and loving, and generous and in spite of our failures shows mercy and grace to us in many ways including our salvation. The Apostle Paul says, “But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy,” (Titus 3:4-5a NIV). Salvation is all God’s work. There is n

GOOD FROM DISASTER! In spite of our best efforts disaster often happens; a flood is one of those things. So it has been in Trinidad. The rains came and the rivers and drainage ditches overflowed. The yards, streets, houses and businesses filled with water despite the owners’ best efforts to stop the rising waters from entering their habitats. A lot of people now live in misery as they wait for the waters to recede so they can begin the clean-up. For many it will take years to recover and for all those affected life may never be the same again. But out of the flood disaster in Trinidad many people have stepped forward to demonstrate the love of God even in bad situations. It is amazing how in

FLOODS! Sometimes floods come suddenly and unexpectedly but sometimes you know they are going to happen and so you try and prepare for them. Sometimes floods and flooding occur because of human failure to do their job…dams burst, rivers overflow, or some other form of flooding occurs because of human indifference or human failure. Hurricanes or storms that bring rain, rain, and more rain and fill the lakes and rivers until they overflow and flood the surrounding farmlands, villages, cities, and homes can cause unbelievable disaster and suffering. We have seen this happen in the United States recently and now it has happened to our friends in Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean. They recentl

EXAMINE YOURSELVES! We live in a society that likes to examine other people but very rarely do people take time to examine themselves. I have noticed this more acutely recently in the political realm. Politicians post ads degrading their opponents but most do not examine themselves and post ads about what their exam of themselves would reveal. I have also noticed this in doctor’s offices recently. They like to exam the patient, poke them, run all kinds of tests on them, and ad infinitum but it appears they very seldom examine the practices of their own front office relating to timely visits, waiting times, billing, personnel, and many other things. And very often people like me forget to run

GOD IS SPEAKING. DO YOU HEAR HIM? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to hear the voice of God? You can you know. God has a transmission line where you can tune in and listen to the voice of God. You don’t need an $800 phone or a data plan. You can be anywhere on planet earth and of any socio-economic status. God is not a respecter of persons. God has given us a talking book, called the bible or Scripture that actually speaks to a person’s heart (soul, mind, spirit) in an inaudible voice through God’s Holy Spirit. The bible expresses it this way, “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly e

APPROVED! I don’t know anyone who likes that word “disapproved.” It seems to carry with it a sense of imperfect, unworthy, defective, failure or not meeting up to standards. When it comes to God I think every Christian down deep in their spirit desires God’s approval on their life. God’s Word encourages us to, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth,” (2 Timothy 2:15 NIV). As Christians God has appointed us all to be workers in God’s kingdom; and as His workers we should all seek to have God’s approval both in this life and when we stand before God to answer for this life. Who wants to sta

SNAKES! I hate to admit it but I just hate snakes and have all my life. My first instinct is to kill them as soon as I can. I know there are good snakes and bad snakes and I also know that where I live the wrong snake bite can be fatal. Yesterday a snake attempted to enter the house through the front door entrance which I think would have been almost impossible for him but you know how sneaky snakes are. Last Spring I surprised a snake as it tried to enter the back entrance to the house. In neither case was I able to capture or kill the snakes. So I guess up to his point the snakes and I are in a stand-off. The good news is that in both cases the snakes were harmless. The bad news is that I

COUNTING THE DAYS! I notice that in the media and on Facebook people are counting the days until the approaching election. Some think there will be a “blue wave” in this election and some think there will be a “red wave.” No one knows for sure at this time. It amazes me that in this life people are always counting the days until some event such as a wedding, vacation, graduation, retirement, or an athletic event. And in some situations in life we count the minutes or hours because they are critical to life or death. There are events and moments in life that grab our attention and cause us to count the ticks of time. All this is part of our human nature since we are not robots without an emot

CLASSIFICATIONS! As a Christian what do you see when you look at the multitudes of people around you; those in your neighborhood, town, village, city, State, or Nation? I live in South Florida and when people view this area they see people in different ways. People may be viewed by their ethnicity, language, color, religion, housing, job, driving habits, sex, voter classification or in a myriad of other ways. But as Christians when we see all these classifications of people are we really viewing them through God’s eyes and with Jesus’ heart? Have we become so classification focused that we really miss the big picture and do we become so evangelistically focused on classifications of people

A REMINDER TO US ALL. FIRST THINGS FIRST. Facebook is covered today with political posts and many of them are about President Trump and our other national leaders. And many of these posts come from Christians. Some, you may agree with and some you may not. I wonder if these Christians expressing themselves in the political arena ever take the time to pray for those they write about. Words can inflame but they can also heal. Prayers offered up to God for those we disagree with have the opportunity to have God respond and change peoples’ hearts and minds; maybe our own. Prayers offered up on behalf of those we agree with can bring encouragement to help them carry on especially if their cause i

REDUCING LIFE TO SIMPLE! If we want to know what life should look like if we are really a follower of God and our final destination is heaven then maybe we should read and incorporate into our lives the words and principles of Psalm 15. “Lord, who may dwell in your sacred tent? Who may live on your holy mountain? The one whose walk is blameless, who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from their heart; whose tongue utters no slander, who does no wrong to a neighbor, and casts no slur on others; who despises a vile person but honors those who fear the Lord; who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and does not change their mind; who lends money to the poor without interest; who does not

SHARING BLESSES OTHERS! As I read the news reports coming from many different sources in the Panama City/Panama City Beach area of Florida I am thrilled at how people are working together to help each other following hurricane Michael. People from many different areas of the country from local to nation-wide are working together to provide water, food, housing, medical care, communications channels, water & power restoration, tree clearing, and building assistance and repairs, and much more. Stores like Publix, Home Depot, Lowe’s and many more are providing needed items like water and ice at no charge. Restaurants like Sonny’s BarBQ and many more are providing free meals. Religious organizat

DESTROYED! When I see the images on TV and Facebook of the destruction caused by hurricane Michael in the Florida Panhandle where Millie and I used to live I am very saddened. Places and structures that were very familiar no longer exist or are extremely damaged or are beyond repair. Lives have been lost, many people injured, many people are missing and some may never be accounted for. Things have changed forever and in the aftermath some people will be affected in ways from which they will never recover. Other people will adjust and move on in life with plans altered; some for the worst and some for the better. I thank God for the compassionate people rushing in to help those affected by th
