LIGHT OUT OF DARKNESS!

LIGHT OUT OF DARKNESS. Christians have the light of Jesus shining in their hearts. “For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ”, (2 Corinthians 4:6 NIV). People meet Jesus in different places. The Apostle Paul met Jesus on the road to Damascus. I met Jesus in a church service. My wife met Jesus at a church camp. People meet Jesus in different places. But when a person meets Jesus, God’s light of truth & salvation penetrates the darkness of the human heart and gives that person the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in Christ. When that happens a person bec

FIRST THINGS FIRST!

FIRST THINGS FIRST. As a young man married with two children I received Christ as my Savior. I had a lot of questions about what this new relationship with Jesus and life was all about. As with all Christians I went from sinner to Saint in an instant through my relationship with Christ but figuring out my future steps in the Christian life raised a lot of questions. And I am thankful for a godly Pastor and a wonderful local church family that helped me to figure that out. And I am thankful for the Word of God and a wonderful wife who walked and still walks the new life with me. A key principle that I learned early in the Christian life was this, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousn

HONOR TO WHOM HONOR BELONGS!

HONOR TO WHOM HONOR BELONGS! Honor as a noun carries the thought of “high respect or esteem, or privilege.” As a verb honor has the thought of regarding someone with great respect or the thought of fulfilling an obligation or keeping an agreement. Jesus said, “Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me” (John 12:26 NIV). The context of this verse is speaking of the future. In the future we will be with Jesus in heaven. In the future we will be honored for our service in God’s kingdom because we serve Jesus today. What we do in daily life here on earth to serve Jesus does affect our life in eternity and our service fo

DO YOU WANT TO HAVE FAVOR IN GOD'S EYES?

DO YOU WANT TO HAVE FAVOR IN GOD’S EYES? God says in His Word, “These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word” (Isaiah 66:2 NIV). One dictionary says that to be humble is “having or showing a modest or low estimate of one’s own importance.” Webster says humble means, “not proud or haughty: not arrogant or assertive” or “reflecting, expressing, or offered in a spirit of deference or submission.” Someone else has offered this definition, “Humility is something that when you think you have it you just lost it.” Think about that. I think when you see true humility in a person you will recognize it. And in our society those people

WORTHLESS?

WORTHLESS? There are many people in this world who feel they are worthless. There are people who make it their main objective in life to make other people around them feel worthless. Many people are driven to commit suicide because of their despair that comes from the depth of these feelings of worthlessness. It appears that we have reached new levels of attempts to bully and cause these feelings of worthlessness in very vulnerable young people through the social media. And often this leads them to acts of violence. Indeed, we have entire industries today built on helping people find their self-worth. But many of these industries lead these hopeless people to build their self-worth on founda

STRONG AND COURAGEOUS!

STRONG AND COURAGEOUS. There he was standing on the bank of the river Jordan. Moses was dead and now there was a new leader. Joshua was standing, maybe bowing, before God and getting his instructions as the new leader. What a humbling, awesome experience that must have been as Joshua listened to God and heard what God was going to do with him and the people of Israel. God uttered these words to Joshua three times in a space of moments and five times in the book of Joshua, “Be strong and courageous” (Joshua 1:6,7,9). This was not a time to be afraid, weak, timid or retreating. This was a time to act boldly, face the enemy and put all the muscle and resources of God and Israel to work. It was

LOST!

LOST! When the earthquake of 2010 happened in Haiti our ministry team had just departed two days before. Pastor Elysee Joseph, my Haitian friend and partner, was supposed to leave Haiti on the day of the earthquake but he was stuck in Haiti for an entire month. Our Administrator who lived in Haiti had a sister in Port Au Prince and right after the quake Pastor Joseph and our Administrator went to Port Au Prince to look for her sister. They never found her. Another one of our employees had a daughter at the University in Port Au Prince. He went to Port Au Prince to look for his daughter. He never found her. These two ladies were buried in the rubble and likely their bodies were scooped up in

DEATH, IT SOUNDS SO FINAL!

DEATH, IT SOUNDS SO FINAL! I encourage you to read Psalm 139 before you continue. It has just twenty-four verses and can be read in just a few moments. Maybe you have someone in your family or someone you know who died recently. When you reach my age death seems to be a constant companion for those in my age group. When death happens people sometimes forget God’s love for us, our families and friends. When a death occurs in the life of those close to us it is a good time to remember God’s love for us now and for eternity. In Psalm 139 the Psalmist says that God knows our heart (v.1), our actions and motives (v.2), our day to day activities (v.3), our words (v.4), and our needs (v.5). The Psa

ADVERSITY VS OPPORTUNITY!

ADVERSITY VS OPPORTUNITY! Most Americans, particularly Christians, find it hard to admit they are experiencing difficulties, so often their friends never stand by them or help them because they do not know what their friends are going through. As Christians we need to be in tune with opportunities that God gives us to help others that are going through adversity especially those in the Body of Christ. “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds?’ Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical need

JESUS IS OUR FRIEND!

JESUS IS OUR FRIEND. As we read the New Testament we often find Jesus dealing with people with problems; the blind or lame, the diseased both physically and spiritually, and multiple other problems. The text very seldom tells us exactly how the people arrived in these conditions and often we see people in conditions caused by Satan or other demons. Yet the text doesn’t very often tell us why these people are bothered or controlled by demonic spirits. The text simply states the problem without a lot of detail and I think there is a reason for that. Jesus loves us whether we bring problems on ourselves, or whether others bring them into to our lives, or whether we are just born with them. In J

FRIENDS!

FRIENDS. The book of Proverbs 18:24 says, “A man who has friends must himself be friendly” (NKJV). My wife Millie has lots of friends. She’s very friendly, willing to talk to just about anyone, and not shy to talk about Jesus. While some people leave a wake of destruction in their paths Millie seems to leave a wake of friends. She makes me proud in a good way. We all know people who just seem to gather friends everywhere they go. That is a great thing to experience in life. I hope it is your experience. Whether we want to admit it or not all of us have an innate desire to have lots of friends. I meet very few people who just don’t care whether they have friends or not. And most of them are v

FELLOWSHIP AND SIN!

FELLOWSHIP AND SIN! God has equipped Christians of all Nations to be able to fellowship together in spite of all the differences that could possibly separate us. In the first four verses of 1 John, the Apostle emphasizes the importance of our fellowship with Jesus and with other Christians. This fellowship is important to us being able to experience the complete joy that God wants us to have. John follows his remarks in those verses with these words, “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not the truth. But if we walk in the light, as

FELLOWSHIPPING WITH JESUS AND OTHERS!

FELLOWSHIPPING WITH JESUS AND OTHERS! You have to admit that the Apostle John knew Jesus pretty well having walked with Him while Jesus was on earth, having stood at the foot of Jesus’ cross, and having Jesus assign his earthly mother’s care to John while Jesus was dying on the cross. And we know that the Apostle John spent His entire life after meeting Jesus promoting God’s kingdom and the message of the cross and even while in exile on the island of Patmos he recorded the future events of God’s kingdom. So John should know a few things about fellowshipping with Jesus and how we can do that and also fellowship with each other. “We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you als

JESUS IS THE ETERNAL LIFE!

JESUS IS THE ETERNAL LIFE. The little book of the bible called “First John” begins with an earth shattering thought, “There is such a thing as eternal life.” Many people think this present earthly life is all there is. When you stop breathing that is all there is. After that comes incineration or a shovel of dirt. But this aged Apostle John says, “Not so. There is more to come.” And then John introduces the one who is eternal life and can give eternal life. From John’s first sentence in this book He proclaims his topic, “The eternal Jesus.” “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we pro

PROBLEM SOLVING!

PROBLEM SOLVING! When you are involved in leadership in a Christian organization or if you own a business you know your email “in box” every day is going to be stuffed with offers to solve all your problems. And that is true of your snail mail box as well. We live in a society today that offers a solution to every known problem. And many times they offer solutions to problems we didn’t even know we had. And I just have a feeling that if there were no problems in the world someone would create problems just so they could offer a solution to the problem. Do you have those same feelings sometimes? Oh, those solutions usually have a dollar amount attached to them. As Jesus aptly noted we have a

OPPORTUNITIES ARE EVERYWHERE!

OPPORTUNITIES ARE EVERYWHERE FOR CHRISTIANS TO MAKE A SPIRITUAL IMPACT! Jesus said, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few” (Matthews 9:37 NIV). As God’s people we need to open our eyes and see the opportunities before us in the places where we live and work to make an impact for the kingdom of God. Sometimes Christians seem to think that God’s harvest field for reaping lost souls is “over there” and mean by that phrase that the lost are in all the other nations of the world but not here where we live. Nothing could be further from the truth. Just as Jesus pointed out to His Disciples that the multitude of lost souls was all around them so are we surrounded by lost souls around u

HOW DO WE VIEW PEOPLE?

HOW DO WE VIEW PEOPLE? When you leave home how do you view people? Do you view people through eyes of fear, anger, compassion, or as friends or as people to be avoided? Or do you just see people as people? Or have you even thought about it? Do you know how Jesus viewed people when He was on earth? “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd” (Matthew 9:36 NIV). I am sure before we were saved that Jesus saw us in the same way. Jesus saw people as harassed and helpless. As Jesus walked among the people He saw that they were just plain tired and weary from all the conditions they faced. They had lost heart and were d

JESUS IS A GREAT EXAMPLE FOR US IN PRIORITIES!

JESUS IS A GREAT EXAMPLE FOR US IN OUR PRIORITIES. “Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness” (Matthew 9:35 NIV). A lot of Christians have lost sight of the need to be among the people all around us “for God’s purposes.” We recognize the fact that most of us have to be among people in order to earn a living, shop, or be involved in ordinary endeavors in life; but do we as Christians recognize the fact that we are there to be God’s living presence and representatives to a lost and dying world? Jesus made it His purpose in life to go to where people were in order to demonstrate t

SOMETIMES ALL YOU CAN DO IS PRAISE GOD!

SOMETIMES ALL YOU CAN DO IS PRAISE GOD! It is possible, even as a Christian, to find ourselves before God and essentially just be spent. We may be out of energy, out of “sorts”, and even out of prayer requests because of the condition in which we find ourselves. Now maybe the “super Christians” never reach this point but I am sure most of us mortals do. And when we find ourselves at that point in life we need to remember to not just look around at our current situation in life, physically, mentally, emotionally, and whatever else but rather to look up to God and remember Him and do this: “Praise ye Jehovah. Praise God in his sanctuary: Praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him fo

THE SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE REFLECTIONS BRING IMPLICATIONS AND LESSONS!

THE SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE REFLECTIONS BRING IMPLICATIONS AND LESSONS. As we have looked at the topic of the sanctity of human life over these few days, though certainly not in the depth to which one should and could go, there are implications and lessons to be learned. The first of these is that human life is sacred regardless of the circumstances and conditions in life. The very first couple on planet earth, Adam & Eve, through their actions have brought death and destruction, tragic circumstances, corrupted conditions on earth, and animosity between the races and nations. Yet in the worse of physical, mental, emotional, or material conditions and circumstances God views mankind as worthy
