TO BE A TRUE SERVANT OF GOD WE MUST BE COMPASSIONATE AND LOVING!

TO BE A TRUE SERVANT OF GOD WE MUST BE COMPASSIONATE AND LOVING. “Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:1-4 NIV). Why should we be compassionate and loving to others? Paul stresses that we don’t act this way just to make ourselves look good before others or just

TO BE A TRUE SERVANT OF GOD WE MUST ENCOURAGE OTHERS!

TO BE A TRUE SERVANT OF GOD WE MUST ENCOURAGE OTHERS. “Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion” (Philippians 2:1NIV). When you come to Philippians chapter 4 you discover there have been some problems in the church between two women and Paul in this verse in chapter 2 is beginning to address that problem by pointing them to Jesus Christ and His work in their lives. Paul starts out verse 1 with the word “if” but really it could be translated “since” because that is the fact. When Jesus comes into your life He brings encouragement to your life and life situation. H

SERVANTHOOD!

SERVANTHOOD. Jesus said about Himself, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many”(Mark 10:45 NIV). One of the greatest failures of the Church in American is that we have raised up a bunch of Christians who feel that the job of the local Church institution and the Church leadership is to spoon feed the congregation one day a week so the congregation can go back to its leisurely pursuits the remainder of the week. It has been my experience in the Church since my salvation experience in 1964 that Christians are much more interested in conspiracy theories than they are in actually serving others, especially the unsaved. But Jesus

CHRISTIANS HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO THE WORD OF GOD: CONCLUSION!

CHRISTIANS HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO THE WORD OF GOD CONCLUSION. “For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths” (2 Timothy 4:3-4 NIV). The Apostle Paul knew this day was coming. I would say this day has arrived and by electronic media it now covers the world. A commentator by the name of Vincent describes things like this, “In periods of unsettled faith, skepticism and mere curious speculation in matters of religion, teachers of all kinds swarm like the flies in Egy

CHRISTIANS HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO THE WORD OF GOD!

CHRISTIANS HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO THE WORD OF GOD. As we reflect on the Word of God as found in 2 Timothy 4:1-5 we discover that all Christians have an obligation to God and His Word. “In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge:” (2 Timothy 4:1 NIV). This is a very solemn charge given to Timothy by the Apostle Paul. It would be easy to say, “This just applies to Timothy or this just applies to preachers.” And the truth is Elders & teachers have a greater responsibility in teaching & preaching the Word than other Christians do. To whom much is given much is required. With responsibilit

THE RESULT OF THE WORD OF GOD FOR THE CHRISTIAN!

THE RESULT OF THE WORD OF GOD FOR THE CHRISTIAN. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Note those two words “so that” in verse 17. There is a result expected from the use of God’s Word in the lives of God’s people (“servants”) and that is that they may be “thoroughly” equipped to do what God expects of them (every good work). God will not expect a Christian to do what God has not equipped them to do or given them the tools to prepare for that responsibility. But the Christian’s responsibility is to study the book God has give

THE BIBLE AS USED BY GOD!

THE BIBLE AS USED BY GOD. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV. Let’s look at the four areas in which God uses His Word in our lives and reflect on that for a few moments. God uses the Word for teaching us His truth and principles. The Bible is God’s greatest teaching tool in our life. All that we need to learn about salvation is in the Bible. All the doctrinal teaching we need is in the Bible. “If the doctrine is not found in the Bible, we have no reason to accept it as spiritually significant.” (Dr. Homer Kent) We spend

THE BIBLE IS A USEFUL BOOK!

THE BIBLE IS A USEFUL BOOK! “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV). The entire bible is a useful book. There is no part of the book that doesn’t have value in our life. Sometimes we have a hard time figuring out what God is trying to use certain parts of the book in our lives for. When we come across those parts then we need to devote more time to that part of the Word so we can find out what God is saying to us. Martin Luther wrote, “I study my Bible like I gather apples. First, I shake the whole tree that the ripest may f

THE WORD OF GOD...REALLY?

THE WORD OF GOD…REALLY? We noted in our reflection on God’s Word yesterday how important it was to read and apply what we do understand of God’s Word so we may read and understand even more of God’s Word. And we also noted that 2 Timothy 3:16 and 2 Peter 1:20-21 reveals to us that the Bible, God’s Word, comes from God Himself. But some will ask how do we know that for sure? Let me just offer a few simple quotes in answer to that question. Dr. Kent, former President of Grace Theological Seminary and one of the foremost Greek scholars of our day had this to say about the Scriptures as noted here, “Since only the Old Testament was complete at this time, Paul’s reference must be primarily to it,

THE WORD OF GOD!

THE WORD OF GOD. The Word of God and the Christian Life go hand in hand. “For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12 NIV). President George Washington said, “It is impossible to righteously govern the world without God and the Bible.” That is a principle that our generation of politicians has forgotten. A President of recent history however, President Ronald Reagan said, “Within the covers of one single book, the Bible, are all the answers to all the problems that face us today—if only we would read and believe.” In another ge

MY FINAL THOUGHTS ON OUR REFLECTIONS ON PSALM 139!

MY FINAL THOUGHTS ON OUR REFLECTIONS ON PSALM 139. Let me finish these reflections where we started in Psalm 139:17-18, 23-24 NIV, “How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand—when I awake, I am still with you” (v.17-18). How do we created beings even begin to comprehend the thoughts of God? Just the thought of God having thoughts blows my mind. I mean God knows everything. I sometimes wonder about some people ever having a thought in their entire life and God’s thoughts out number the gains of sand. The more I know about God the less I know about God. The more I try to understand God the more I realize

HELP GOD'S KINGDOM GROW!

HELP GOD’S KINGDOM GROW! Our Haitian friends at Calvary Missionary Evangelical Church, a church plant in Lake Park, Florida, need your help. Chuck preaches at this church on the fourth Sunday of every month and is involved in helping them with their strategy and resource needs for reaching the Haitian population in the Lake Park area. As with many Haitian ministries in the U.S. the church has many people within the church and community who are without available transportation to attend church for worship or other events. At present time it is very difficult to gather all the people who need transport to the church facility and as with most church plants the church is limited in resources to

THE OMNIPOTENCE OF GOD: APPLICATIONS!

THE OMNIPOTENCE OF GOD: APPLICATIONS. What can we apply to our lives based on the four reflective posts concerning the Omnipotence of God? The Apostle Paul reminds us that this glorious omnipotent God is able to save us (1 Corinthians 15:1-4, 54-57). Jesus died for our sins that we might be saved from sin. God demonstrated His power to save us by resurrecting Jesus from the grave. God through His omnipotent power has given us victory over death. Because of the omnipotent God we have we should not have doubts about His power to save. There is no other God to save us. Religion cannot save us. Only the Omnipotent God, who created everything, including us, has the power to provide for our salvat

THE OMNIPOTENCE OF GOD IS DEMONSTRATED IN THE SUPERNATURAL REALM!

THE OMNIPOTENCE OF GOD IS DEMONSTRATED IN THE SUPERNATURAL REALM. The Gospel of Mark chapter 5 records three miracles performed by Jesus to demonstrate His power and the fact that He is the Omnipotent glorious Messiah God everyone was expecting. In Mark 5:1-18 is the account of Jesus confrontation with a man indwelt with a legion of demons. This man lived in the tombs where the dead were buried and he was mentally disturbed and so strong because of the indwelling demons that even chains could not constrain him. Jesus sent the demons out of the man and the demons possessed a herd of 2000 pigs and ran off a cliff into the lake and drowned. What is my point? Our God is so powerful that even the

THE OMNIPOTENCE OF GOD IN HUMAN EVENTS!

THE OMNIPOTENCE OF GOD IN HUMAN EVENTS! God’s power is often shown in the course of human events. Most people have read about or heard about the biblical account of The Flood in Genesis 6-8. God brought rain for forty days; he opened the heavens and the waters in the earth and he covered the earth with water. Everything on earth died except the people and animals on the ark. God’s power destroyed everything on earth and yet saved enough to begin anew. You remember Sodom & Gomorrah in Genesis 18 & 19. God was willing to spare the cities if 10 righteous people could be found in the cities. And the cities went up in flames when God rained down burning sulfur on them. When we witness catastrop

THE OMNIPOTENCE OF GOD: YOU!

THE OMNIPOTENCE OF GOD: YOU! Think of God’s power in relationship to the creation of life…human births, if you will. Mankind tries to tinker with what God created perfectly and he messes things up, as we all see on and in the news almost every day. But man in his efforts still hasn’t figured out how to create life out of nothing or better yet…take dust and make life or take a rib and make life. Only God can do that. The best man can do is try to manipulate genes & destroy embryos. So think about these first occasions when God demonstrated His Omnipotent power in creating life. First there was Adam, who was formed out of the dust of the ground according to Genesis 2:7 and God breathed life in

THE OMNIPOTENCE OF GOD!

THE OMNIPOTENCE OF GOD! What a glorious powerful God we love and serve. What do we mean by the term the OMNIPOTENCE of God? The word “Omnipotence” comes from two Latin words: “omnis” meaning “all” and “potens” meaning “power”. So “Omnipotence means “all powerful” or “unlimited in power.” The word “Omnipotence” is identical to our English word “almighty” and the word “almighty” occurs 56 times in the King James Version of the Bible and is never used of anyone but God. God can do anything He wants to do that is consistent with His own nature. God has limited Himself in two areas. God will not do anything that is contrary to His nature. So don’t bother asking God to do anything that is inconsi

THE OMNIPRESENCE OF GOD: TWO LIFE APPLICATIONS FOR CHRISTIANS!

THE OMNIPRESENCE OF GOD: TWO LIFE APPLICATIONS FOR CHRISTIANS. For several days now we have been reflecting on the Omnipresence of God as presented in Psalm 139:7-12. Here are two life applications that you and I can make to this great truth. First, God is with us in every situation in life. Jesus said, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20 NIV). “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5 NIV). As we walk through this life God is our constant companion. He is there by our side. We will not encounter any situation in life that we must face by ourselves. We can be sure God is always with us. He will never leave us nor forsake us for
