“THE TYRANNY OF THE URGENT!” How’s it going? Here we are at the end of the first month of 2018 and we should ask ourselves about how 2018 is going. Are those promises and commitments you made at the beginning of the year being kept or have they become lost in the busy activities of daily life? Have you taken action to get on the road to fulfillment of those goals you set for 2018? If not, why not? Life just has a way of making us take care of all the things that “pop-up” on a daily basis instead of letting us get done what is really important. It is called the “tyranny of the urgent” (not original with me) and we all experience it. In fact most people live by that principle. As I review 2017

MEET WONDER WOMAN IN PERSON! At some point in my life I discovered I was living with Wonder Woman. “A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies” (Proverbs 31:10 NIV). You must read all of Proverbs 31! Really, I encourage you to do it now please. It must have been hard 3000 years ago to find a good wife. Things haven’t changed much in 3000 years. The verses that follow verse ten in this chapter describe what a wife of noble character is like and I think it is a perfect description of a Christian “Wonder Woman.” Any woman demonstrating all these characteristics would be a wonder indeed but they are certainly characteristics every woman should strive to possess.

TRY THIS PRAYER ON FOR SIZE! The society we live in today is very materialistic. We believe more is better and those who have less are to be pitied. Over all families living today build bigger houses and fill them with more stuff than any generation before us. We also accumulate more automobiles and vehicles of all kinds (boats, snow mobiles, etc.); fill our wardrobes with all the clothing we can stuff in; and for good measure rent storage units to handle all the extra “stuff.” Do we see a problem with this? Hear the prayer of the writer of Proverbs 30, “Two things I ask of you Lord; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but g

GENERATION Z IS IN TROUBLE! What’s wrong with Generation Z? “Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction” (Proverbs 29:18 NIV). The King James Version says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” The word “revelation” or “vision” is also translated in other versions as “prophecy” which carries the idea of a prophet preaching God’s Word. I think we could say in simplicity that when there is no preaching of God’s Word by God’s messengers or when there is no consistent distribution of the Word of God among the people that surround us then several things are going to happen. Wh

THE UNCERTAINTY OF LIFE! “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring” (Proverbs 27:1). One thing we must keep in mind about life; life is uncertain. How many times in your life have your plans been interrupted regarding the next day of your life? In my lifetime there are just too many to count or remember. Does that mean we should not plan for the future, even for our next day? No! But we should live with the knowledge that every day of our life is in the Lord’s hands and it is His right to change our direction and our plans at His discretion. The day that brought clarity to Millie and I in His call for our life to His ministry was a planned day of shopping that en

FOOLS, SLUGGARDS, GOSSIPS, DECEIVERS, LIARS! The book of Proverbs deals with some tough subjects and in Proverbs chapter 26 we really get an ear full concerning some of the worst people in the world and they all seem to be wrapped up in the word “fool.” Psalm 14:1 (NIV) says, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God. They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good.” It is from this definition of a fool that all his actions seem to flow. The “fool” who has no regard for God or His principles of life demonstrates in his behavior just how foolish he is. God amply demonstrates this in Proverbs 26. The fool is described as being “wise in his own eyes,” (v.5), unreliabl

LET’S CELEBRATE! Today is one of the greatest days of the year. Today my family celebrates an event that has had very important implications for all the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren descended from Millie and me. Today is my wife Millie’s birthday! We will not go into the long history of Millie’s birthdays except to say her birthday celebrations seem to last for at least a week, beginning days before and sometimes going for days afterward. And Millie is not too shy to let you know in advance that her birthday is approaching. And I noticed on Facebook recently that now my daughter is promoting her mother’s birthday. So let’s celebrate! After all Millie is a wonderful person

WHO NEEDS ENVY ANYWAY? Everyone is faced with the temptation of envy. It just seems to come naturally, which is understandable because of the sin nature we are born with. The bible says, “Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord. There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off” (Proverbs 23:17 NIV). There seems to be many definitions of envy but they follow the same line. Such as, envy is a “painful or resentful awareness of an advantage enjoyed by another joined with a desire to possess the same advantage” or envy is a “desire to have a quality, possession, or other desirable attribute belonging to (someone else).” But on a

WHAT’S IN A NAME? Does a name really mean anything? Think about a few names: McDonalds’s, Apple, Wendy’s, Facebook, Disney, Burger King, ATT, FOX NEWS, GOOGLE, & Jesus. As it turns out names do mean something. The names I just mentioned immediately carry messages to our mind about who they are and what they offer. And as insignificant or as great as we may think we are our name is important because it carries messages to the people who know us. What does your name say about you to those who know you? I know few facts about my grandfather on my father’s side of the family. The most important fact is what I have seen written on his tombstone. My grandfather died at an early age so I never had

WHO OR WHAT CONTROLS OUR PRESIDENT? What does that question bring to mind for you? Is it Twitter? Is it the Wall? Is it immigration? Is it tax cuts? Is it those on “Wall Street” or those big financial machines? Or is it just the desire to see America being made great again? Don’t worry this is not a reactionary political post. But God does give us some advice regarding “kings” or in our case the President. “In the Lord’s hand the king’s heart is a stream of water that he channels toward all who please him.” (Proverbs 21:1 NIV) The media spends a lot of time spreading “fake” news about the President so as to sway people’s opinions against the President. And the opposition party does the same

GLORY AND GRAY! Too often the older generation condemns the younger generation and there are a lot reasons for that both pro and con. But no matter your age or how you view life and the young people of today God has this to say, “The glory of young men is their strength, gray hair the splendor of the old.” (Proverbs 20:28 NIV) I haven’t seen the Marines recruiting any old men today. Though I became a Marine at the age of seventeen they would pass me up in a heartbeat today. They haven’t even called me to ask for my wisdom. As you examine the bible you will find how God used young people to carry out His program for mankind. Over and over young people were God’s choices. It is not that God di

LENDING TO GOD! That sounds foolish to even say it. After all God is the creator of the heavens and the earth. Everything in the universe belongs to God (Psalm 24:1). What do I have that I could even lend to God? After all God gives and God takes away and in doing so blessed is the name of the Lord (Job 1:21). As Christians we are stewards of God’s possessions not owners of them. Stewards have responsibilities not rights. But while occupying God’s world on this planet we interact with other human beings and God does notice how we treat other people and how we respond to people in need. God speaks to us in human terms about our treatment of and response to other people. “Whoever is kind to t

FRIENDS, WHO NEEDS THEM? Some people seem to have adopted the attitude that they really don’t need friends. Cutting and slashing their way through life they leave a trail of broken relationships and bad memories for those who have known them. Thinking life is all about them and using people to meet their own needs without concern for the trail of destruction they leave behind these people have few people in their lives who really mean anything to them. People who approach life in this manner are missing life’s greatest blessings and will often end up disillusioned and lonely souls. The Bible says, “A man that hath friends must show himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticks closer t

WHO IS IN CHARGE OF YOUR PLANS? Human beings like to plan. We plan our lives from birth to death. We plan vacations. We have building plans and we have marriage plans. And on it goes. Plans, plans, and more plans. But who is really in charge of your plans. In Proverbs 16:3 (NIV) it says, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” We are reminded also about our tendencies in Proverbs 16:9 (NIV), “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” Yes, we humans love to plan. But I wonder where God fits into most of our plans. How much time do we spend consulting God before we make our plans? We can make all the plans we want but it i

WORDS DO MATTER! Life is not all about physical activity. We are known by what we say as well as what we do. Proverbs chapter 15 (NIV) is full of advice on this topic. God’s Word says, “A gentle answer turns away wrath” (verse 1), “The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge.” (v2), “The soothing tongue is a tree of life. (v4) By our words we can make people angry or we can help bring peace to an intense situation. The choice is ours. As a Pastor I know sometimes we can unintentionally add fuel to the fire by choosing the wrong word or being misunderstood. But whenever possible each of us should work to use our words to heal and help rather than to intensify anger. And sometimes people may misqu

CAN A GPS BE WRONG? As one who has ended up in some strange locations by following the directions on my cell phone I can tell you that GPS directions can be wrong. And I get the same reports from other individuals and also posts on the web. When someone followed me the other day in their car to a place where we were going and we arrived at our destination the first thing they said was, “That’s not the way my phone said.” You know and I know that the GPS will not always take you the best way or the right way to where you are going. Life is like that as well. About three thousand years ago the writer of Proverbs noted, “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.

WHAT ARE YOU LEAVING TO YOUR GRANDKIDS? All of us who have grandchildren probably think about this at some point in our lives. And rightly so because God’s Word says, “A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children.” (Proverbs 13:22 NIV) Most people probably think about this in terms of material items such as cash, stocks, bonds, houses, jewelry, etc.; items with monetary value. And certainly that is alright but do those things actually add the greatest value to the lives of our grandchildren? Those things often bring greater harm than good to people we may love. And what about people who are “dirt” poor through no fault of their own; how do they leave an inheritance of m

THE COST OF SPREADING CHEER. I don’t think anyone doubts that we reside in a world of people beset by anxiety. The pharmaceutical industry doesn’t doubt that and they make billions of dollars because of the medicines they produce to address the issue. Many people think they have a right to be anxious because of the mess this world is in; or least in their perceived condition of the world whether true or not. Think about it: global warming , hydrogen bombs, poisonous chemicals, food shortages, immigration , population explosion, health issues (always a new one), employment, political situations all over the world, and fill in your own list of things that may cause people to be anxious. Most o

RIGHTEOUSNESS VS SINFULNESS! The book of Proverbs is a book of contrasts in many ways and very often in just a few words reveals great truths that are not only true but also strike to the core of life. In Proverbs chapter eleven great contrasts are drawn between righteousness and wickedness. For greatest impact you need to read the entire chapter but here I just want to point out how God views some of the results for being righteous. Often Christians wonder why they should bother trying to live a godly life in an ungodly world where it seems the unsaved are actually doing “better” than they are. But we need to remember to view the world through God’s eyes not the eyes of those in the world.

WHAT DID YOU SAY? Sometimes you just have a hard time believing what someone has said. And sometimes what comes out of the mouth of Christians is astonishing. Christians use language today that just a few years ago would have been considered vulgar. Can it be that our generation of Christians has been too overly affected by the world’s vulgarity? And I have to believe that if our language has been affected then maybe our thinking has been affected as well. In Proverbs 10:11 (NIV) we read, “The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,” so I have to think that our words reflect our righteousness or holiness before the Lord; and that what God really expects to come from our mouths are word
