WHAT DOES GOD LOOK LIKE?
WHAT DOES GOD LOOK LIKE? Artists have tried to show us down through the ages what God looks like. Poets have tried in many ways to share their thoughts about the characteristics of God. Writers have written books on it. Also people in many ways have tried to represent God in their own image. But if you really want to know what God looks like you should go to the source book of God's own statements about what He looks like. Just read God's Word, the Bible. Here are just a few verses from the NIV on how God describes Himself and for greater context you should read the entire first chapter of the bible book of Colossians. "The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation," (Colossians 1:15 NIV). "For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him," (Colossians 1:19 NIV). "For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form," (Colossians 2:9 NIV). If you want to know what God looks like you must look at Jesus because He is the exact representation (image) of God and all that God is (fullness) resides (dwells) in Him. Why is this true? Because Jesus is God and the Bible is God's source book to reveal Him. Don't get hung up on the works of artists, poets, writers, and musicians. And I don't say that to discredit them but rather to note that they, like each of us are human, and open to error in expression. If you want to know what God looks like dig deep into His Word and especially concentrate on the person of Jesus. Jesus is God in the flesh. He came to show us the heart and characteristics of God and to teach us how God wants us to live for Him and reflect Him in this life. We may not know His (Jesus) exact physical characteristics at this time but we will one day when we see Him face to face. So if you really want to know what God looks like LOOK at Jesus in God's Word. And just like it takes time to really know another human being it does take time to know what God really looks like. So keep reading and studying God's Word. It is because Jesus is God that He could say, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well,” (Gospel of John 14:6-7a NIV).
