THANK GOD FOR GEORGE WASHINGTON!
THANK GOD FOR GEORGE WASHINGTON! In 1789, George Washington made a public proclamation concerning what we call Thanksgiving: “By the President of the United States of America. A proclamation: Whereas, it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor-and Whereas, Both Houses of Congress have by their joint committee requested me `to recommend to the people of the United States a day of Public Thanksgiving and Prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many favors of Almighty God…" Now, therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November, to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be.”
I’m glad our founding Fathers were not like many of those who serve in Congress today. Today, we would be eating the turkey while Congress would still be trying to figure out the meaning of the word “Thanksgiving” and taking surveys to see how the public would react to such a proclamation. God bless George Washington and the congressional members of that day. This is a great time of year because it reminds us to stop and thank God in a special way for His many blessings. We spend a lot of time asking God for things so it is good to remind ourselves that we need to spend just as much time thanking Him for His blessings as well. And it would be well to also “be devoted…to the service of that great and glorious Being” as well. As the Psalmist said, “Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing,” (Psalm 100:2 KJV).
