STALE BREAD! When my wife and I lived in the Panhandle of Florida we found it difficult to find a fresh loaf of bread of any brand or kind. Maybe it was the places we shopped or maybe it was the days of the week we went to the store or maybe we don’t know what fresh bread is or maybe it was limited in supply. I don’t know and still don’t know the reason why there seemed to be no fresh bread in our part of the Panhandle. We thought South Florida would be different because of the multitudes of people and stores. Yet very seldom is there fresh bread in our household. The only thing I can figure out is that people are in line waiting on the bread truck and all fresh bread is purchased immediately. I wish I knew the truck’s arrival time but that seems to be a closely guarded secret kept from newcomer’s to South Florida. Or maybe bakeries have learned how to bake stale bread.
All this has led me today to think about what Jesus said. He said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty,” (John 6:35, 45 NIV). People had come to Jesus looking for a sign like the manna that fell in the wilderness during their forty years of wandering in the desert. But what Jesus offered them was the real life giving sustenance of God; Jesus Himself, the very one who could give them eternal life which they could never obtain with natural food or anything else earth had to offer.
Very often people live their lives searching for the natural things of life which will bring a great deal of pleasure which is fleeting in time and usually has no long term beneficial effects; like a fresh loaf of bread. What people usually find after all those daily searches is short-lived and ultimately stale in long-term satisfaction. Such were the people who came to Jesus looking for a miracle to satisfy their curiosity and when Jesus gave them God’s answer to their daily and eternal needs they rejected Him and many people stopped following Him at that point. Jesus is the answer to God’s provision for this life and the life to come. Life for now and eternity will never be stale with Jesus.
