SPECIAL DAYS! November is full of special days. As you probably know the first Sunday in November is time change Sunday. On that Sunday at 2:00AM we turn our clocks back one hour, try getting an extra hour of sleep, and get back on Standard Time, whatever that is. I think mainly it means more darkness awaits us. With fewer farmers these days I am not sure of the value of all these changes. We also celebrate the birthday of the United States Marine Corps on November 10 as we remember on that day in 1775 the Continental Marines were established by the Second Continental Congress. Tun Tavern, in Philadelphia, PA is regarded as the birthplace of the Marine Corps. On November 10, 1958, as a seventeen year old young man, I graduated from “boot camp” in Parris Island, S.C. and began a four year tour of duty with the Marines. November 11 is special also as the day we celebrate the service and sacrifice of all military Veterans, those persons who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The history of Veterans Day is interesting and certainly would be good for all to study. Special ceremonies will be held throughout the U.S. and certainly our Veterans have brought uncountable blessings to our country. Veterans deserve our respect and remembrance for their honorable service and sacrifice on behalf of the citizens of this country.

November is also the month we Americans celebrate “Thanksgiving” each year and the day falls on the fourth Thursday of the month. It began as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year when it began. The historical roots of Thanksgiving are religious but I am afraid it has more secular than religious meaning today. And for my wife and I November 23 is a very special day as we celebrate our wedding anniversary together. We are thankful for God’s blessings over the course of our marriage which are too numerous to mention here. But I thank God for His wonderful blessing of a wife who is beautiful both inwardly and outwardly. Every man would be fortunate to be blessed by God as I have been. So let me close my reflections this morning with these verses from God’s Word, “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is He who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations,” (Psalm 100 NIV).
