SOMETIMES! Sometimes I wonder why God blesses the people of the United States of America. I survey the political scene and see all the crazies coming out of the woodwork during election seasons and I really wonder if we are a nation of laws or have we arrived at the point where those who curse and yell the loudest control the future of the county. While our country is filled with violence from sea to shining sea people who are raking in millions of dollars from the opportunities the country affords them often lead in cursing and reviling the police and military who protect their rights to earn those millions of dollars. The Church, supposedly composed of “real” Christians, appears at times to be almost as bad as those causing chaos in the political arena. Every day you read and hear of mega-church Pastors falling through moral failure and other clergy leaders, both Protestant and Catholic, failing through sexual sins or other gross moral failures un-thought of years ago. In the middle of the chaos the Nation continues to allow the “slaughter” of a million babies a year through abortion and calls it “women’s rights” while by its actions the Nation declares babies have no rights. I consider myself a Patriotic American, and I have served in the military and I have also ministered to the spiritual needs of America’s people for most of my life, but as I look at our country I sometimes wonder why God still blesses this Nation as the people have moved further and further away from God.
My conclusion to sometimes wondering about all these things is that just like salvation God’s blessings on America are all because of His Grace, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do,” (Ephesians 2:8-10 NIV). God does a great work of salvation in a Christian’s life and it is a gift for us because we are totally unworthy of that salvation. But God also expects us to exhibit that gift in the way we live for Him in this world. Is the failure of our Nation at this point a reflection of the failure of the Church, the body of Christians, to live as it should in our society at this point? Sometimes I do wonder about that and as a Pastor I wonder how we Pastors are doing at leading Christ’s sheep in a proper path in a society in which God has placed great opportunities for the work of the gospel to advance. “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he,” (Proverbs 29:18 KJV). Will God continue to bless America if we have lost a vision for advancing His Kingdom? In another translation of that verse it says, “Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction,” (Proverbs 29:18 NIV).
Will God continue to bless America if we continue to cast aside His revelation (the Bible) and continue to cast off all restraint and multiply the sins of the Nation by ignoring God’s wisdom? Sometimes I wonder why God blesses the people of the United States of America in its present condition. Thank God for His Grace.
