PROBLEMS! Everyone seems to have them and they come in a variety of ways; health, finances, relationships, disasters, and the list seems endless. As a Director of a Christian Missions Ministry a lot of my time is spent dealing with problems of all types. Some are what we call “good problems” and some are definitely “bad problems” but all of the problems involve time and effort and sometimes pain or joy and often financial involvement. When you serve God in any capacity you will have problems; our enemy Satan will see that you do. And God allows these problems for a variety of reasons and sometimes we discover the cause or reason and sometimes we don’t. Even the Apostle Paul had problems while serving God and we all know what a great servant of God he was. Paul said of his exalted ministry among men, “Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:7-9 NIV).
Much speculation abounds as to what Paul’s problem actually was but one of the lessons for us is that as long as we are in the world and ministering for Christ we will have problems and often these problems will be a product of Satan’s opposition to our work on God’s behalf. But in the middle of these problems we can know that God is at work in our lives for His purposes and God will provide the Grace we need to overcome the problem through His power. We may be weak but God really is strong. Some problems are short-term or as with Paul they may be long-term but one thing we can be assured of and that is that God’s Grace is always sufficient and when we are weak then we are strong in God (2 Corinthians 12:10 NIV). Problems? Yes we will have them but if we rely on God then “our power is made perfect in weakness.”
