I LIKE DR. POL!
I LIKE DR. POL! I don’t know if you know who that is but he is a Vet who has a program on National Geo Wild and my wife and I really like the program. We have learned a lot about animals through watching this show. It is educational, heartwarming and often heartbreaking all at the same time. I have learned a lot about sheep and the people who raise them on this program and I am amazed how attached those who have pet sheep really get to those animals. But Dr. Pol amazes me also as he really has a love for taking care of an animal’s physical needs and because of the great sympathy he has for the animals. And it is also amazing how some of those sheep get really attached to their owners. And I do believe Dr. Pol is a Christian and lives out his faith in Jesus.
I think Jesus would and does like Dr. Pol also. Jesus in an ongoing discussion with the Pharisees (religious leaders of his day) about sheep, sheep pens and shepherds said this, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. ..I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me,” (John 10:11, 14 NIV). In this discussion where Jesus is teaching the Pharisees spiritual truth He plainly says several things that were very important to His audience and are very important to us. First, Jesus states He is the true good shepherd. As Ellicott’s Commentary explains, “The word “good” means that which is fair, and is in a physical sense that which is in its own nature excellent, and in a moral sense that which is beautiful and noble. He is the Shepherd who is ideally good, fulfilling every thought of guidance, support, self-sacrifice that had ever gathered round the shepherd’s name. No image of Christ has so deeply impressed itself upon the mind of the Church as this has.” The second thing noted here is that the shepherd is willing and in fact in Jesus’ case did lay down His life for the sheep (all who would willingly be His sheep). The third thing of note is that the sheep and the shepherd know each other. There is no doubt in the sheep’s mind who it belongs to and there is no doubt in the shepherd’s mind which sheep are His. I am glad I am one of the sheep in the Good Shepherd’s fold. How about you?
