HURRICANES! There is nothing quite like a hurricane. Death and destruction threaten life in multiple ways as a hurricane approaches what appears to be a peaceful and tranquil environment. When the hurricane strikes the wind, water, waves, airborne debris, uprooted and broken trees, collapsing structures, remaining chaos, subsequent injuries, lack of food, water, medical care, and subsequent disease can and often does take human lives. My wife and I have lived in the land of hurricanes, Florida, for most of our adult lives. We have learned to take the threat of hurricanes seriously and attempt to avoid them at all costs when we can and we make all the suggested preparations for them we are able to. But we have seen over the years that during hurricanes the most unexpected things and events happen that bring catastrophe on many people. Life is like that. Death can come when we least expect it and in spite of all our preparations to avoid it. It is well before any hurricane to make preparations for its arrival and know that even the unexpected may happen. It is well in life to make preparations for death before its unexpected appearance as well.
One of the most famous verses in the Bible is Amos 4:12, “Therefore this is what I will do to you Israel, and because I will do this to you Israel, prepare to meet your God.” God had worked in the life of the nation of Israel for many years with many disastrous events and warning them of judgment to come but they simply ignored God’s warnings but a time of judgment was now imminent. Most people, like the nation of Israel, simply live life but never make preparation for death and the eternity to follow; they make preparation for the present but not for their future spiritual well-being. In Hurricane Michael, that came to visit Florida and several other States, it at the last moment expanded into one of the worst hurricanes to ever hit the Gulf coast of Florida. It struck the area where we used to live. And people met an unexpected death. Our hearts and prayers went out to the families of those who lost loved ones to death and to those who lost all their earthly possessions. Certainly life will never be the same for the survivors of most hurricanes. But let all of us realize that life is uncertain on a daily basis with expected and unexpected disasters that can occur at any moment and sweep us into eternity without warning; and let us prepare to meet our God before they happen. “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household,” (Acts 16:31 NIV) because “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved,” (Romans 10:13 NIV). I would suggest that if you haven’t already done it that you make your preparations for a meeting with God NOW!
