FLOODS! Sometimes floods come suddenly and unexpectedly but sometimes you know they are going to happen and so you try and prepare for them. Sometimes floods and flooding occur because of human failures…dams burst, rivers overflow, or some other form of flooding occurs because of human indifference or human failure. Hurricanes or storms that bring rain, rain, and more rain and fill the lakes and rivers until they overflow and flood the surrounding farmlands, villages, cities, and homes can cause unbelievable disaster and suffering. We have seen this happen in the United States many times and it has also happened to our friends in Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean. Not long ago they had flooding that was the worst in their country in fifty years and some would say the worst ever. We have friends in Haiti who also experience flooding quite often and suffer terribly because of it.
A dear friend, who is the Pastor of Cornerstone of Grace Fellowship in Trinidad, reported that in the great flood they experienced their church had been spared flooding within their building but his home had been flooded with up to six inches of water. Many people in the church were affected by the flooding but the people in the church prepared lunch for those who had been flooded. In addition they planned a way to help in a bigger and better way for those in great need. God reminds us in His Word that as Christians we should help those in need and especially those Christian brothers and sisters in need. James says, “Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?” (James 2:15-16 NIV). James is talking about putting our faith into action.
The Pastor of Cornerstone has been working for over twenty years to reach the Island nation of Trinidad for Christ. People at Cornerstone, though suffering themselves, wanted to help those around them in need. It is in times like this when Christians can help others by showing compassion and providing them with financial help and other assistance in their great need. Faith in action during situations like this may touch hearts for Jesus that might not be reached otherwise. Floods may prompt special acts of compassion but our faith should be in action every day. Be alert when God gives you opportunities to put your faith in action. Disasters may occur at any time in any place in any way.
