COUNTING THE DAYS!
COUNTING THE DAYS! I notice that in the media and on social media people are counting the days until the approaching election. Some think there will be a “blue wave” in this election and some think there will be a “red wave.” No one knows for sure at this time. It amazes me that in this life people are always counting the days until some event such as a wedding, vacation, graduation, retirement, or an athletic event. And in some situations in life we count the minutes or hours because they are critical to life or death. There are events and moments in life that grab our attention and cause us to count the ticks of time. All this is part of our human nature since we are not robots without an emotional part to us.
God has something to say about counting days as well, “Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away…Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom,” (Psalm 90:10, 12 NIV). Everyone it seems counts days in some manner but how many people really “count or number” their days so they are fruitful for God. To be honest I never thought I would live to be sixty years old because the track record of men in my family was not good. So after I became a Christian I wanted my life to count for God as much as possible. But as I grew in my Christian faith I realized that God determined my days much more than family history because there are a lot of variables in living and in God’s plan for each of us. As I have reached in my life span some of those time frames mentioned by the Psalmist I am still seeking on a continual basis God’s “heart of wisdom” so I will know how to best use those days for God’s glory. As I write this reflection I hear the ticks of time of the clock on the wall and am reminded I need to use this day with wisdom in serving God. An election regarding human affairs is not my main interest. How about you?
