THE TRUTH! It appears in our world today people have trouble telling the truth and with our society’s ability to record every word spoken and with the ability it seems to video almost anything people are often caught in lies about what they said or did. Mark Twain, the great American humorist of former days had some advice for everyone. Mark said, “If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.” Along with Charles Spurgeon he said, “A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.” The reality today is that a lie can travel all the way around the world the moment it is spoken (I think that is true). Will Rogers, another American humorist of former days said, “If you ever injected truth into politics you would have no politics.” He may have been close to the truth on that statement. But I think Albert Schweitzer hit closer to the truth when he said, “Truth has no special time of its own. Its hour is now—always.”
God’s Word also tells us what God thinks about people always speaking the truth, “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy,” (Proverbs 12:22 NIV). But God also wants us to perform the truth in our actions, “To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice,” (Proverbs 21:3 NIV). It is not easy for people to respond in truth in everything because of the sin nature everyone is born with and because Satan is so active in society. After all Satan is the “father of lies” and he is all around us promoting lies in opposition to what God desires for us. So the Christian is wise to be aware of how most of society operates today because society says, “A little white lie never hurt anyone;” which in itself is an untruth. The Bible is emphatic that Jesus is, “The way, and the truth and the life,” (John 14:6 NIV) and as Christians we believe that Jesus is the ultimate truth in all things and we proclaim to be people of “the truth” so we speak and live the truth in all things. If we as Christians always speak the truth then we really don’t have to remember what we said previously because what we said will always be the same truth even if we don’t use the same exact words in restating the truth. It is easy to speak the truth as opposed to remembering lies.
