AMERICA FIRST? I think by now we have all heard the slogan without the question mark and maybe there is some confusion about what it really means and some may jump on the band wagon and some may curse the bandwagon. On election day in Florida my wife and I do not head out to our local voting precinct to do our civic duty. In Florida my wife and I vote by absentee ballot because my wife has some physical difficulties that make it impossible to vote in person. Florida has an excellent, safe, and established process for doing this. It does take some time to research the names on the ballot and attempt to make wise choices concerning our elected pubic officials but it is necessary because what they do in office really does affect all our lives whether we are Republicans, Democrats or Independents. And sometimes we do wonder if it really does make a difference if we vote since “the swamp” often covers both local, state and national meeting places for those in public office. But God has given us the opportunity in this great country to participate in and influence the operation of government so vote we must.

Slogans are always a part of political campaigns and people seem to either disparage them or rejoice over them. I think a great campaign slogan for Christian voters and others as well would be, “Jesus First!” After all He is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords and I really do believe His leadership and government would be better for all people rather than just for a few in the past, current or future ruling party. After all the principles that Jesus would govern under would be right and just for everyone. I think my slogan stands little chance of being the slogan of many for any election cycle but for us Christians we certainly should consider following biblical principles in our voting habits and attempt to elect those who we believe will also try to follow God’s principles in serving in our public offices. We may not always make the right choices and the candidates we vote for may often disappoint us but let us use the privilege God has given us in this land of freedom and let us vote.

Let us also remember that when the votes are counted and the office holders installed that we should follow God’s principles and do as Paul urged his disciple Timothy, “I urge then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to come to a knowledge of the truth,” (1 Timothy 2:1-4 NIV). If the people in our country followed God’s desires we would have much less strife, hatred, verbal and physical battles and a lot more progress for all people in making America truly great and truly godly. And possibly more people would be saved; after all isn’t that what we as Christians want?
