WHERE DID THE SUMMER GO? Do you ever feel like that about the seasons? In most places, in normal times, sometime in August children have returned to school, family vacations are over, and high school football games have begun. People are thinking about the upcoming Labor Day holiday which usually marks the traditional end of summer and the beginning of Fall. But one summer not too long ago Summer was really different for my wife and me as the entire summer was involved in weeks in the hospital and rehabilitation facility, doctor office visits, and home health care people in and out of our home. We could honestly say that year, “Good riddance to summer” and “Welcome to the Fall season.” We are thankful for God’s goodness, care and provision during normal and abnormal times. We were happy when Fall life began once again to take on some semblance of normalcy, whatever that is in our household. So how did your summer go this year? What are you plans for the rest of the year?

In the above mentioned summer of difficulty I had the privilege of preaching regularly at a Haitian Church in Lake Park, Florida. I was scheduled to preach every fourth Sunday of each month in this church plant which reaches out to its community with the message of Jesus Christ. My Spirit is uplifted every time I attend this small church with a big vision. They sure know how to worship God with their singing, Scripture reading, prayers, study of God’s Word and involvement of everyone in worship. Every church should be like that church. Our society is often discouraging to many people as we see the wickedness around us and the work of Satan in many areas of life but as I read Psalm 27 David reminds me, “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living,” (Psalm 27:13 NIV). Even in summers of difficulty.

In this little church in Florida the goodness of the Lord is abiding and hopefully making an impact on the world around them. If you are looking for the “goodness of the Lord” in your life in summers (or other seasons) of difficulty take note of David’s final words in Psalm 27, “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord, (Psalm 27:14 NIV). God wants you to take part in experiencing His goodness in your life so open your heart to Him and see the goodness of the Lord as He shares it with you in many ways you may not have thought of before. Maybe He will share His goodness through difficulties, prayer, medicine, or even church attendance. Summer, or seasons of difficulty, may be ending but there is a lot of year left in which to experience the goodness of the Lord.
