BLANK! Each morning when I get up and stare at the page on which I write it is always blank. Sometimes my mind goes blank; some would say it is always blank. An artist very often faces a blank canvas and then creates something beautiful from it. I have always been amazed at how my wife does that since my only artistic ability is drawing “stick people” and I do a poor job at that. A chalk board (remember those) very often starts out blank and then a teacher writes on it and it becomes an amazing place of learning. Children are kind of like that when they are born. Obviously God usually endows them with all the necessary equipment to enter life and become part of their family and society; but in essence they are like a blank page waiting to be filled with all kinds of things from good to bad to beautiful or ugly. As parents how the blank page turns out depends a great deal on us. Sometimes the blank page turns out all wrong.
Sin has a way of twisting the way we fill the blank page of life; whether from those who start us out in life or from our own mistakes and sinful ways we can take our page of life and really make a mess out of something that could be filled with beautiful things. I am thankful that God is always willing to wipe our page clean and give us an opportunity to fill the page with things that are pleasing to Him, others and us. As I look back over all the years of my life I can see how God has worked to help me fill the page of my life; sometimes wiping the page clean from failures and mistakes and sometimes taking total control and filling the page as He chooses in spite of all my efforts to fill the page as I choose.
The bible gives us something to think about concerning these things, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts,” (Isaiah 55:8-9 NIV). If we really want to fill the page of our life with great, beautiful and worthwhile things it would be to our advantage to get close to God and begin to discern His ways and His thoughts to the best of our ability so our page could reflect those things. And it would be good if we could help those just starting out in life with a blank page to do the same. For those times we mess the page up God has a solution for us as well, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness,” (1 John 1:9 NIV).
