FOOD: NECESSITY OR OBSESSION?
FOOD: NECESSITY OR OBSESSION? It may be both depending on the person and the circumstances but there is no denying that food and the right food is necessary for a healthy life. Food deprivation can lead to malnutrition and/or death and often does in many countries and sometimes even in the United States the land of plenty of food resources. It appears to me that in the countries that are the wealthiest in the world that those countries have become obsessed with food; quality, appearance, quantity, preparation, TV shows, cook books, magazines, consumption, and celebrities. And often just across the borders of those countries people are starving to death.
God’s Word remains us also of the importance of spiritual food, “Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good,” (1 Peter 2:1-3 NIV). Spiritual food is necessary for growth in our spiritual lives and the quality of that food is important and the purging of things that harm our spiritual health is necessary. Sometimes Christians can get so settled in the Christian life that they lose that craving for spiritual food like they had when they were new Christians and if that should occur growth in their spiritual lives can become stunted. Often Christians can become more concerned with the appearance of the spiritual food and the quantity of the food and the celebrity presenting the food than the effect of the spiritual food itself.
The purpose of spiritual food is first of all to let us taste that that “the Lord is good,” and bring us into a salvation experience. The result should be that “like newborn babies” we should “crave” the intake of the Word of God so that we grow in our salvation relationship with the Son of God. In our land of plenty let us not get so enthralled by the versions of the Bible or the teachers of the Word or the method of presenting the Word that we forget the PURPOSE of the Word of God. And let us not forget that around us and throughout the world that there are people starving for the Word of God while we hoard it and never share it. Let us not be among the hoarders or non-sharers.
