WHAT? SURGERY! I have never met a person who enjoyed having surgery on any part of their body even when they recognized the necessity of it being done; sometimes even a life-saving necessary procedure. We live in an age when medical personnel can do amazing things to help us live long and healthy lives by doing surgery on our ailing bodies; or at least to give us the opportunity to live longer even though we may need to make major adjustments. Often our life habits cause this condition requiring surgery to occur and often it may be an accident that requires it or maybe just being part of the human race and often living in a country where living conditions make it a necessity at some point. As a long-term Pastor in the U.S. and also being involved in third world countries I have been around many people who have had surgery and many who needed it but didn’t get it. The difference in surgery or no surgery is often life or death.
This is also true in the spiritual realm. Spiritual surgery on every human heart is necessary and is the difference between life and death. The prophet Jeremiah said, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9 ESV). Only heart surgery by God can help us spiritually to have a healthy heart, “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh,” (Ezekiel 36:26 ESV). Heart surgery by God is an instantaneous event but it also is a life changing event and with the Psalmist we must cry out, “Create in me a clean heart, O God and renew a right spirit within me,” (Psalm 51:10 ESV). The depraved human race very often knows that heart surgery is necessary to have a right relationship with God and yet most of the human race resists the surgery because it can be painful; giving up what the sinful human being has grown to love in the world and submitting to the will and leading of God Himself. Spiritual heart surgery is necessary for every human being but the results are life changing and eternal in results. Jesus said spiritual heart surgery is a life changing event, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God,” (Matthew 5:8 ESV). How is your heart health today?
