VALUABLE OR NOT? I don’t know about your home but around our home I have noticed that stuff just seems to accumulate. One day the garage door is opened and there it is stuff, stuff, stuff. Another day you open the closet door and suddenly there is no room to hang another item of clothing. And yet another day you open a drawer or a cabinet door and it suddenly dawns on you that maybe things have gotten out of hand. Maybe it is time for a garage sale or a box of stuff needs to be given to some charity. Or maybe it is time to ask the question, “Where does this stuff come from?” That might require some thinking about a lot of areas of our life and it might make us ask the question, “Is this stuff necessary and valuable or not?” And a lot of other questions may then follow concerning our Christian stewardship.

From time to time it is a good idea to evaluate our physical homes and the items they contain but it is also important on a regular basis to evaluate our spiritual life and the things that occupy it as well. Sometimes our physical homes are also a reflection of our spiritual lives whether good or bad. It is possible for our spiritual lives to become cluttered with all kinds of things that are not bad in and of themselves. But when those things begin to squeeze out the really important things that should occupy our Christian life like bible study, prayer, worship of God both private and corporate, service for God, and proper stewardship of what God has trusted to us then it is time to do serious evaluation and eliminate some clutter. The bible says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it,” (Proverbs 4:23 NIV). Just as we sometimes may discover that our homes have become cluttered with stuff unintentionally or intentionally so our spiritual lives may do the same. And sometimes we may need to declutter our place of residence and sometimes we may need to declutter the stuff in our spiritual lives. Most of us guard our homes in one way or another and we should also “guard our hearts.” Today is a good day to start the decluttering process of life.
