LONELINESS! Is it possible to be surrounded by people and yet experience a feeling of loneliness? Yes, indeed it is. It is possible to be in a crowd and feel like a duck out of water wondering where the other ducks are. It is possible to be in a hospital with all kinds of hospital personnel passing through the room and by the open door and still be lonely. It is possible to attend a church service and leave the building and yet feel the pangs of loneliness. It is possible to be a handicapped person residing at home and yet not see or talk to another person for days and feel very lonely.

A Christian may be faced with all the things mentioned above and sink to the depths of despair and loneliness if the Christian forgets what God has said in His Word. God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you,” (Hebrews 13:5 NIV). Jesus told the Apostles before He departed for Heaven, “I am with you always, to the very end of the age,” (Matthew 28:20 NIV). No matter where the Christian is God is with them. Though a Christian experiencing feelings of loneliness may feel like an orphan at times God assures us that is not the case. Jesus told the Apostles, “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you” (John 14:18 NIV). In a place of loneliness we may not see Jesus visibly or hear Him audibly but He is there and we can communicate with Him. Jesus can lift the oppression of loneliness and fill the heart with His complete joy.

Christians often have lives so full of activity that we often forget those around us who are enduring loneliness short-term or long-term. What an opportunity we have to enhance the lives of those around us by a simple visit or phone call. Could God use you today or this week to break the spell of loneliness in the life of a lonely person? Could you be the hands and feet of Jesus to minister to someone who needs to see the body of Christ in action? Some of the most beautiful people I have met in life are those who took the face of Jesus to lonely souls who felt forgotten. Could you be the face of Jesus to a lonely soul in need this day?
