HOSPITALITY! When we read the New Testament the word “hospitality” takes on the definition meaning “a love of strangers.” It is a virtue that every God-follower should incorporate into their lives by demonstrating generosity and kindness to those in need without grumbling and with humility and grace. The Apostle Peter said, “Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in various forms,” (1 Peter 4:9-10 NIV). None of us will make it through this life without needing to experience the hospitality of others and certainly we as Christians should be the model of what hospitality means.

Jesus and His Apostles relied on the hospitality of others as they traveled through the country of Israel proclaiming God’s Word and healing those in need. What a great opportunity those who practiced hospitality toward Jesus had to serve God in a special way. Those same opportunities are available to us today for God’s Word says, “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it,” (Hebrews 13:2 NIV). Opportunities abound around us to show hospitality to others. We do not need to be owners of elaborate homes or possessions to serve others nor do we have to look far to see examples of what God is asking us to do.

There are very common opportunities around us to practice hospitality and fulfill what the Word of God tells us to do. “Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, ‘Go, I wish you well, keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?” (James 2:15-16 NIV). Our “love of strangers” may reflect our actions to our next door neighbor in feeding them or clothing them or it may be to those thousands of miles away who are in need. Either way our actions should reflect love, humility, grace and no grumbling. Who knows if we could be ministering to angels unaware?
