HOUSE OR HOME?
HOUSE OR HOME? There is a real difference between a house and a home. A house may be defined as a building where people live or meet for an activity. The term can even be applied to a structure for animals; such as a “dog house.” Sometimes it may be called a residence or dwelling. But a home carries with it a more intimate meaning. It suggests a place where a person has taken a building or even a part of a building and converted it into a space reflecting the people residing there. Home is like a sanctuary reflecting the values and beliefs of the people residing there. A house may be glorious in structure on the outside and decorated with the finest furnishings on the inside and yet not really give one a real feeling of being “home” or even reflecting the true values of the people residing there. A house can be simple in structure and sparsely decorated but when one steps inside the feeling of being in a sanctuary and among people who love one another brings the feeling of really being in a “home.”
In my lifetime I have lived in a lot of different buildings. Many times those buildings could just be described as buildings or houses because they never really had the feeling of home. Sometimes they were just temporary stops on the road of life without a feeling of sanctuary or home. Marriage changed that for me. In sixty years of marriage my wife and I have lived in numerous locations while serving in Pastoral positions and as church planters and as missionaries. In every case my wife and I worked hard to turn a house into a home; a sanctuary for our family, friends and others who needed it. Sometimes those houses were very simple and in other times much better but in each case it was possible to turn a house into a home. It is not so much the décor that makes a home but rather the people who live there.
Some day, as Christians, we will live in a beautiful house that will also instantly become a wonderful home. Jesus said, “In my father’s house are many rooms, if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am,” (John 14:2-2 NIV). Heaven will be a wonderful place prepared for people whom God loves and who also love God. Heaven will be the ultimate sanctuary and the ultimate home in every way. Just as it takes effort to turn a house into a home on earth so we must make preparation for the home that God offers us who now live on planet earth. One of the disciples of Jesus asked Jesus how they would get to this beautiful home in heaven. Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me,” (John 14:6 NIV). I suspect some who are reading this are searching for a real home. Now is the time to guarantee your home in heaven by accepting Jesus as your Savior. He is the only way. If you call upon His name you will be saved and your room reservation will be secure.
