CONTENTMENT! What does it take in life to be content? Socrates said, “He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have.” We see that played out in life very often. Some anonymous person said, “Contentment is an attitude that says, ‘I will be satisfied with what God has given me.’” That works but most people haven’t arrived at that point in life. It seems the world we live in today promotes discontentment in order to sell us contentment and many politicians thrive on the anxieties of society so that they can change the political order by promising to bring contentment to everyone.
As Christians we should be contented people whatever our lot in life. The biblical writer of the book of Hebrews said, “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you,’” (Hebrews 13:5 NIV). When you have Jesus walking with you He can make you content in any situation. We need to remember that, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (Hebrews 13:6 NIV). When our heart is set on God and our walk in this life is guided by Jesus and the Holy Spirit we should obey the advice found in Proverbs, “Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord. There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off,” (Proverbs 22:17-18 NIV).
The hope and goal of every Christian should be to reflect Jesus in our attitude and walk through this life. It is true and always will be that “godliness with contentment is great gain,” (1 Timothy 6:6 NIV). The things of this world will not bring real contentment because, “we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it,” (1 Timothy 6:7 NIV). Contentment will be found in this world when we find a proper relationship with Jesus and we are satisfied with every situation and provision He allows in our life because He is present with us.
