PROMISES! Someone has defined a promise as “a declaration or assurance that one will do a particular thing or that a particular thing will happen.” Very often promises are made and then broken. Perhaps all of us are guilty of that and almost certainly all of us have had promises made to us only to see them broken. With broken promises often comes disappointment and very often guilt on the part of the offender. There is however one person in the universe who has never broken a promise and that person is God. What God says He will do He does. We will never experience a broken promise from God. God’s Word, the Bible, is full of promises God has made to us. It will be well to take a few days and reflect on some of those promises.
Trouble often seems to follow all of us in life in one form or another and often our response is, “Woe is me” and we attempt to deal with trouble in our own human resources as we forget God’s promise concerning trouble. The Word of God says, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble,” (Psalm46:1 NIV). Trouble often takes us by surprise and it can be overwhelming but the trouble we experience never takes God by surprise and no amount of trouble can overwhelm God. When there appears to be no refuge from our trouble and we have used the last ounce of our wisdom or our strength to deal with our troubles God is patiently waiting to be our refuge and strength. God is ready and willing to help us in the middle of our troubles.
God’s promise of help “right now” when we are in the midst of trouble is something we need to remember and count on. Our strength may be small but God’s strength is unlimited. Our place of refuge may seem to have disappeared but God always has a place of refuge for us. Let us rely on God’s great promise of help every day of our life and especially when trouble comes because He is an “ever present help in trouble.”
