WALKING THE WIRE! It seems at times we walk through life on a high wire with a long pole in our hands attempting to keep our balance so that we don’t fall to sudden disaster. There is the sky above, the ground way below, the winds are blowing, rain begins to fall, and would you know it, there are people behind us shaking the wire. Life can be like that sometimes as all the pressures of life press in on us; people, finances, uncontrollable situations, health, work; the list of pressures seem endless. As humans it is easy to have sympathy for those who face the “high wire” without a safety net or divine friend to help them through the turmoil of life. As Christians we know, “whom (we) have believed, and (are) convinced that he is able to guard what (we) have entrusted to him until that day,” (2 Timothy 1:12 NIV). Regardless of life’s situations God is able to help us and keep us in His care for now and eternity. The writer of the book of Hebrews reminds us, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever,” (Hebrews 13:8 NIV). God’s care is always present in our lives no matter the high wire we may be walking at the present time. When we commit our life to him for eternity that includes the present time in our life. If He can keep us in His care for eternity He can also take care of us in the present time regardless of the situation.
We may not get off the high wire at the time we desire and we may have trepidation as we walk the wire but we do have a helper in our walk. God has encouraged us to walk the wire with courage, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus,” (Philippians 4:6-7 NIV). May God help each of us to walk the wire looking up and not get our eyes on the wire and what is below where disaster awaits. God’s peace transcends our earthly sight and His answers to helping us keep our balance are more secure than all human wisdom.
