COFFEE! Almost the first thing I do in the morning is head for the kitchen and make myself a cup of coffee. So I asked myself today if I could start my day without a cup of coffee. And the answer is yes but I do enjoy my coffee while I read, write and meditate on God’s Word. And that started me thinking about other habits I have and for sure I have many. Some are good and some probably irritate the people I live and work with but of course those are not done on purpose to irritate them. And I find as I get older that habits of any kind are hard to break. As I look back over life I am glad I developed certain habits early in life because they have helped me to lead a better life in my relationships with God and other people. There are certain habits I wish I had developed earlier in life and there are habits that I could have helped my family to develop that would have enhanced their lives as well.


God talks a lot about habits in His Word. Moses spoke to the people of the nation of Israel and gave them this command about a habit they needed to establish in obeying God, “These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you,” (Deuteronomy 6:1-3 NIV). If we establish and follow the habits God outlines in His Word from the book of Genesis to Revelation we can enjoy happy and successful lives (in God’s eyes) whatever life brings our way. Habits are important, some more than others (coffee is optional), and the sooner we establish God’s directed habits in life the better off we will be. And by God’s grace maybe we can do away with the habits that irritate others.
