BEYOND THE CURTAINS!
BEYOND THE CURTAINS! Before my wife retired, her last job was as the Assistant Property Manager for a very high-end property development in Northern Florida on the Gulf Coast. Sometimes I would help the company in various tasks including some times as a security officer. Almost all these homes, which included multi-million dollar homes, owned by many politicians, athletes, entertainers, doctors and lawyers, had walls around them. As I drove around the development I could not help but wonder what was beyond the curtains. What was inside the home? I had watched as many of these homes were being constructed but now what was the inside really like? I knew how some of the people themselves looked and acted in public but I wondered how they really were beyond the walls and behind the curtains.
Curtains hide a lot of things. Our lives in some ways are hidden by curtains. As you view an “old” or “older” person you may just see an “old” person. But really who and what are they and where they have been in life? The things they have attained and the knowledge they have gained and shared with others and so much more are hidden beyond the curtains of the now aged body. And unless one takes the time to somehow draw back the curtains and see what is really there one will miss some of God’s most choice blessings. As I thought about this I am reminded that the same is true of our relationship with God. Unless we take the time to draw back the curtains of God’s Word we will miss the great truths and blessings that God wants to share with us. As it takes time to draw back the curtains of a person’s life so it takes time to look inside the Word of God and examine what is behind the curtain. It takes time to do more than driving around the road and wanting to peer inside. You must open the door to really see what is inside and discover what our great God wants to reveal to us.
The Apostle Paul told young Timothy to, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth,” (2 Timothy 2:15 NIV). The study of God’s Word, not just a casual reading, will help us to understand the God we love and serve. The curtain will be drawn back so we see God in all His fullness and receive the blessings of knowing Him as He really is not as how we would imagine Him to be. And while we study the Word of God to really see Him maybe we can take the time to really see behind the curtains of those with whom we interact each day. There may be some blessings there as well.
