WISHFUL THINKING! I have met a lot of people in the last few months who say they want to serve God. We have discussed the needs of people in the world and their need to know Jesus as their Savior. Also, we have discussed the different ways Caribbean Vision Ministries, a ministry I am associated with, is involved in serving Caribbean people and how they may also become involved in this service to people whether through CVM or other organizations or in their daily living. Most of these people are Caribbean people themselves and I see and hear from them a desire to serve God by serving the Caribbean people. I don’t doubt their sincerity because they are already in the service industry where they work though it is “secular” work. But for most, if not all, of these people their expressed desires are simply “wishful thinking” because they will never take the steps to make “desire” reality. I have seen that a lot in my fifty years of ministry for Jesus and it saddens me because I know the blessings they could be to others and the blessings they themselves are missing.

In my lifetime though I have seen countless numbers of people who have responded to the call to serve God both in short-term missions, full-time ministry, and daily ministry for God where they live and work. These folks are a blessing to others, to God, and to all of us who have chosen to step outside of “wishful thinking” and make service to God a daily living reality. And all those who serve are being blessed by God now and will reap rewards for all eternity. There are certain areas in all our lives where “wishful thinking” does exist but in this area of serving God and serving others we must step beyond “wishful thinking” and make it a reality in our daily living. True disciples of Jesus serve others.

Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it,” (Luke 9:23-24 NIV). Jesus also said, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave, just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many,” (Matthew 20:36-38 NIV). I trust that you and me will get beyond “wishful thinking” and truly serve God and others in our daily lives and “in all the world.”
