DO YOU WANT TO HAVE FAVOR IN GOD'S EYES?

DO YOU WANT TO HAVE FAVOR IN GOD’S EYES? God says in His Word, “These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word,” (Isaiah 66:2 NIV). One dictionary says that to be humble is “having or showing a modest or low estimate of one’s own importance.” Webster says humble means, “not proud or haughty: not arrogant or assertive” or “reflecting, expressing, or offered in a spirit of deference or submission.” Someone else has offered this definition, “Humility is something that when you think you have it you just lost it.” Think about that. I think when you see true humility in a person you will recognize it. And in our society those people are few and far between and often a truly humble person will be “walked on” and “mistreated.” But let us not make the mistake of thinking humility is a lack of strength. There was not a more humble person who ever walked this earth than Jesus Christ and no one in their right mind would think he lacked strength of any kind.

Webster also defines “contrite” as “feeling or showing sorrow and remorse for a sin or shortcoming.” Certainly God expects that of us and if we are not sorrowful and remorseful over our sins as expressed in our spirit and our actions how could we ever expect to find favor with a holy God? As Christians we know that sin breaks “fellowship” with God and that “confession” restores us to God’s fellowship and favor. It bothers me today that I observe so many professed Christians living in open sin; living lives that are more like the non-Christians than people who profess to be children of the living Holy God and His Son the Holy Jesus Christ.

Isaiah says that favor with God comes to those “who tremble at” God’s Word. “God says what He means and He means what He says.” I am sure you have heard that old saying. And it is true. God does not speak just to hear his-self talk. And God’s Word is filled with words that bring joy to our lives but God’s word also should “strike the fear of God” in us as well. God and His Word deserve our respect and our belief in what He says. When we view the Holy God in His Word that should cause sinners like us to tremble and fall before a Holy God in reverential fear confessing our sins and God’s Holiness and power. Then and only then can we expect the real favor of God in our lives. ("Daily Reflections On God's Word" Volume 1 by Dr. Chuck Davis).
