WORTHLESS? There are many people in this world who feel they are worthless. There are people who make it their main objective in life to make other people around them feel worthless. Many people are driven to commit suicide because of their despair that comes from the depth of these feelings of worthlessness. It appears that we have reached new levels of attempts to bully and cause these feelings of worthlessness in very vulnerable young people through the social media. And often this leads them to acts of violence. Indeed, we have entire industries today built on helping people find their self-worth. But many of these industries lead these hopeless people to build their self-worth on foundations of sand.
Jesus just has a way of putting all this into perspective for us, “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows,” (Luke 12:6-7 NIV). People spend too much time listening to the criticisms of the world and what the world considers things and people of value. People who look to find their value in the system of the world, which is under the influence of Satan, will never find real value in life because once you achieve what the world considers of value you will find it never lives up to God’s standards. One of the best things that parents can do for their children is to help them find what God really considers of value in this life and for eternity and where each of us finds our self-worth. Regardless of what the world says and regardless of what the bullies around us say real worth in God’s eyes is not based on our appearance, intelligence, or social standing. Our value is based on what the Creator thinks of us and He loves us at all times and will take care of us all the time. We are valuable to God.
We will always have critics around us and we will always have those who try to bully us but our God is bigger than those people and our self-esteem is based on our relationship with God not with the world. As adults we need to be aware of those around us who are going through a crisis of feeling worthless and we need to encourage them and lead them to God’s evaluation of them and His care and concern for them.
