JESUS IS THE ETERNAL LIFE. The little book of the bible called “First John” begins with an earth shattering thought, “There is such a thing as eternal life.” Many people think this present earthly life is all there is. When you stop breathing that is all there is. After that comes incineration or a shovel of dirt. But this aged Apostle John says, “Not so. There is more to come.” And then John introduces the one who is eternal life and can give eternal life. From John’s first sentence in this book He proclaims his topic, “The eternal Jesus.” “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us,” (1 John 1:1-2 NIV).
John describes himself and the other Apostles as “we” and he says they all had the same experiences. They heard Jesus speak in private conversation and in public discourses. They all saw Him with their own eyes for at least three years morning, noon and night in private times and public appearances. They had opportunities to examine the life of Jesus and they had opportunities to be examined by Jesus. All the Apostles had an opportunity to touch Jesus, man to man, shoulder to shoulder, and to see His physical body before death and after resurrection. Jesus was not a spirit walking around disembodied, He was not an apparition. Jesus was human flesh. It is this Jesus John is speaking of and He is the “Word of Life.”
John makes clear this is the Jesus that appeared on earth, and they saw Him in all His humanity and this is the Jesus that He is testifying or witnessing about and in this Jesus he is proclaiming the eternal life. This person, Jesus, was with the Father prior to His appearance on earth and He appeared to the Apostles and thousands of others when He came to earth. As John states it Jesus was from the beginning of all things (in fact He created all things) and then at the appointed time in God’s program this Jesus left His place with the Father and appeared to the Apostle John and all mankind. He resided on planet earth for a period of time…just long enough to provide for the salvation of the human race. THE ETERNAL LIFE was here and now through Him and His work on the cross we can go to be with Him. This present life on earth is not the end but rather it is just a beginning to a glorious future if you know the one who is THE ETERNAL LIFE.
