PROBLEM SOLVING! When you are involved in leadership in a Christian organization or if you own a business you know your email “in box” every day is going to be stuffed with offers to solve all your problems. And that is true of your snail mail box as well. We live in a society today that offers a solution to every known problem. And many times they offer solutions to problems we didn’t even know we had. And I just have a feeling that if there were no problems in the world someone would create problems just so they could offer a solution to the problem. Do you have those same feelings sometimes? Oh, those solutions usually have a dollar amount attached to them.

As Jesus aptly noted we have a problem concerning the spiritual harvest field today, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few (Matthew 9:37 NIV).” That problem was acute in Jesus’ day and it is acute today. And I must say God’s Church has tried to address this problem and I have seen multiple programs come and go and yet the problem still exists. Money and programs will not solve the dilemma. Jesus is the greatest problem solver in the world and He gave the answer to this problem 2000 years ago. “Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field,” (Matthew 9:38 NIV). So why is it we still have a shortage of committed workers in God’s harvest field?

Could it be because we have ignored Jesus’ solution to the problem? I am not the most astute person in the world, not even close, nor am I the smartest Pastor or Christian worker in figuring out the solutions to all the problems in the Church today. But I just wonder if the fact the Church as a whole is praying less and “performing” more doesn’t have something to do with the shortage of workers in the harvest field? I rejoice in churches sending more short-term mission teams, local churches performing action programs in their communities, more small group involvement, simple churches, and a multitude of other programs and outreaches in our churches. But I cringe when I see less emphasis on prayer, regular prayer services discontinued, more secularization of the church, and fewer Christians sharing their professed faith because their lives aren’t lived by the directions given in the Word of God. I just know I am in the ministry today because of a praying Pastor and praying Christians in the small church where I was saved. What would happen today if the Church really got on its knees and asked the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into the harvest field?
