THE SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE AND SOCIAL PROTECTION! We were discussing in yesterday’s reflection how God has placed intrinsic value on each person and demonstrated it in placing mankind over all His creation. But that intrinsic value of each person is also demonstrated by God in the Bible by the way God has provided social protection for the human race. “But the Lord said to him, “Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer Vengeance seven times over. Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him,” (Genesis 4:15 NIV). The life of human beings is sacred. God holds sacred even the lives of sinful human beings like Cain who killed Able. He provided protection for Cain at that time in human history.
God also provided social protection for the lives of human beings after the flood of Noah’s day. That protection provided a life for a life. “Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind,” (Genesis 9:6 NIV). In the Mosaic Law, given as the nation of Israel left Egypt in about 1445B.C., God amplified the actions to be taken for those who committed murder and other violent sins. God gave detailed instructions concerning punishment for those who held human life in contempt and mistreated other human beings. Human government was also appointed responsibility to provide social protection so that people can live peaceful and orderly lives.
God sees all people as worthy of respect and dignity and God desires that people and governments see other human beings as being sacred beings in their eyes. As sacred creations of God, created in His image, all people deserve social protection; even those in the womb, and “the diseased, disabled, disadvantaged and the deranged.” As humanism has been creeping into our society and often overpowering Christian values the lives of many people are in danger, including the unborn. Our government often fails in its responsibility to protect sacred human lives and too often the Church and the nation’s religious leaders stand idly by as non-Christians become more vocal in their demands to snuff out precious lives among us. The blood of an estimated sixty million unborn children snuffed out in abortions in America since 1973 should incense all of us and we should demand that the government begin to fulfill its job of proper social protection of human lives. The government protects all the sexual deviants of the world; cannot the government protect innocent life in the womb and the precious needy people already living among us?
