TO BE A TRUE SERVANT OF GOD WE MUST ENCOURAGE OTHERS. “Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,” (Philippians 2:1 NIV). When you come to Philippians chapter 4 you discover there have been some problems in the church between two women and Paul in this verse in chapter 2 is beginning to address that problem by pointing them to Jesus Christ and His work in their lives. Paul starts out verse 1 with the word “if” but really it could be translated “since” because that is the fact. When Jesus comes into your life He brings encouragement to your life and life situation. How does He do that? Paul says encouragement happens because of our being united with Christ.
Think of that. The moment we become united with Jesus Christ through the salvation experience we become Sons of God and join heirs with Christ. All that Jesus has we now own. And in addition we become Ambassadors of Christ. We represent Christ before the world. The world can be a pretty discouraging place sometimes. But we need to remember who we are in Christ and what we have in Christ. And we need to share the truth of that reality with others who find themselves so discouraged in this world.
Because of who we are in Jesus Christ we can serve others SECURELY. Service for the Christian doesn’t happen because of the need to get something like self-fulfillment or a salve for a guilty conscience. Service by the Christian is the result of a relationship that we have with Jesus Christ that compels us to serve others just like Jesus did. And our service in the name of Jesus encourages others and points them to the CROSS of Christ. ("Daily Reflections On God's Word" Volume 1 by Dr. Chuck Davis).
