CHRISTIANS HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO THE WORD OF GOD CONCLUSION. “For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths,” (2 Timothy 4:3-4 NIV). The Apostle Paul knew this day was coming. I would say this day has arrived and by electronic media it now covers the entire world. A commentator by the name of Vincent describes things like this, “In periods of unsettled faith, skepticism and mere curious speculation in matters of religion, teachers of all kinds swarm like the flies in Egypt. The demand creates the supply. The hearers invite and shape their own preachers. If the people desire a calf to worship, a ministerial calf-maker is readily found.” Even those who would consider themselves the lowliest of Christians must always be ready to give an answer for the Hope that is within them in this pagan society.
TV, radio, Internet, cell phones, ipods, podcasts, and who knows what else allows people to create their own gods. You can have religion of any stripe & color and you can custom design what you want to believe and how you want to worship. But the only life giving truth is found in the Word of God and though we get disgusted with the way things are in the world we still must proclaim the Word. And we must find new ways to reach people with the Word. We need to be as wise in distributing and preaching the Word as Satan is in preaching false doctrine. We who are older must find ways to help the younger generation carry out God’s command to them to reach their generation. And our younger generation is very adept at using modern methods to get their message out.
“But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry,” (2 Timothy 4:5 NIV). This is a continuing obligation that God has laid on us to be faithful to His Word and the proclaiming and distribution of His Word. Jesus is coming soon! But until then the work of proclaiming the gospel continues. We all must be involved in spreading the Word. Sometimes I just get tired. Sometimes I look around and say, “I sure would like to just tie a hammock between two trees, grab a glass of ice tea and forget about the world.” And then reality hits. I’m still living and breathing. I still have responsibilities and people are still unsaved. And I just have to say to myself as Paul said to Timothy, “Discharge all the duties of your ministry.” PREACH THE WORD. Just before the death of actor W.C. Fields, a friend visited Fields hospital room and was surprised to find him thumbing through a Bible. Asked what he was doing with a Bible, Fields replied, "I’m looking for loopholes." To some people the Bible is a joke. To others it truly is the Word of God that is able to make man wise unto salvation. What is the Word of God to you today?
