THE BIBLE AS USED BY GOD. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work,” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV). Let’s look at the four areas in which God uses His Word in our lives and reflect on that for a few moments. God uses the Word for teaching us His truth and principles. The Bible is God’s greatest teaching tool in our life. All that we need to learn about salvation is in the Bible. All the doctrinal teaching we need is in the Bible. “If the doctrine is not found in the Bible, we have no reason to accept it as spiritually significant,” (Dr. Homer Kent). We spend way too much time reading “books” and not enough time reading “The Book.” If you want to learn about God and His pattern of life for us then get in the Bible.
The Bible is also used by God to rebuke us. God loves us BUT He also will rebuke us. God will use His book to confront, refute and rebuke the sinning person, the wandering soul, the ignorant and the religious heretic. People choose not to read the bible so that they will not have to face up to condemnation of their actions. It is easier to ban the Bible from public life than to have God’s Word confront us in wrongdoing. And Christians also take the easy way out. It is easier to avoid God’s Word than to be confronted by the Living God. God teaches us. God rebukes us when we need it. But God is not like the person who knows everything that is wrong but has no solutions to the problems. God not only teaches and rebukes through His Word but God also gives instruction on how to correct our problems. We just need to pay attention to what God says in the Bible. Quite often we seek corrections for our problems in all the wrong places, i.e., friends, books, advice columns, TV, CD’s, current media personalities, etc. More often than not we can find the answer to our problems in God’s Book and by following His directions our problems can be corrected and solved.
God also instructs us or gives us an education or training in how to live righteous lives. Men are born sinners and live like sinners until they meet Jesus. We all need to be trained in how to live righteous lives. That is what the Bible will do for us. When we read the Word of God the Holy Spirit uses the Word to train us in righteous living. When you see a Christian missing the mark in righteous living you can almost be certain that this Christian is not reading, studying and applying the Bible in his or her life. As I have observed myself, my children, my grandchildren and now my great grandchildren I see the reality of the need for instruction in living righteous lives. Not one of us has automatically followed the righteous actions of God. All of us have needed proper training in order to follow what God wants to see in all our lives. The Word of God is available to help all of us.("Daily Reflections On God's Word" Volume 1 by Dr. Chuck Davis).
