THE WORD OF GOD!
THE WORD OF GOD. The Word of God and the Christian Life go hand in hand. “For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart,” (Hebrews 4:12 NIV). President George Washington said, “It is impossible to righteously govern the world without God and the Bible.” That is a principle that our generation of politicians has forgotten. A President of recent history however, President Ronald Reagan said, “Within the covers of one single book, the Bible, are all the answers to all the problems that face us today—if only we would read and believe.” In another generation Billy Sunday, a famous baseball player in the 1800’s and then a famous evangelist in the early 1900’s said, " The bible will always be full of things you cannot understand as long as you will not live according to the things you do understand." These men, though dead, rightfully remind us that the Word of God and godly living go hand in hand.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work,” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV). And Billy Sunday was right, we will not fully understand the Word and be thoroughly equipped if we do not obey what we already understand. The Apostle Paul makes it clear here that the Bible is not just another book, it is not just another collection of books like Shakespeare’s writings, or Tom Clancy’s or Patricia Cornwell’s. God Himself “breathed” Scripture by His very breath through the work of the Holy Spirit. And the use of the word “Graphe” (Scripture) in these verses “means that which is written-words, phrases, and sentences (not just ideas)” (Dr. Homer Kent).
The Apostle Peter said it this way in 2 Peter 1:20-21 NIV, “Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” Tom Clancy may choose to write. Patricia Cornwell may choose to write. But those who wrote the Bible did not choose to write but rather wrote as God directed them. The active response of the Christian to the reading, study, understanding and obedience to the Bible, the Word of God, is critical to the Christian living a successful Christian life. As President Reagan pointed out our success to handling life’s problems is bound up in reading and believing God’s Word. ("Daily Reflections On God's Word" Volume 1 by Dr. Chuck Davis).
