THE OMNISCIENCE OF GOD: GOD KNOWS THINGS BEYOND OUR COMPREHENSION!

April 7, 2020

The Omniscience of God: God knows things beyond our comprehension. As David reflected on the greatness of God he said, “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain,” (Psalm 139:6 NIV). God’s knowledge is beyond our comprehension. How can we even begin to comprehend the knowledge of God? In the book of Job there is an ongoing conversation between Job and some of his friends. They ramble on for 37 chapters telling each other how much they know about God and how great their comprehension of God is. Then in Chapters 38-41 God speaks. And in reply Job speaks to God and says, “You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’ Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know,” (Job 42:3 NIV).

By God’s own declaration Job was the most righteous man on earth at that time and yet even Job only had a small comprehension of God and His knowledge and attributes. As evangelical Christians we often “pride” ourselves on how well we know the bible and how well we know God. How foolish we must look to God at times. We attempt to put God in “boxes” and make God jump through “hoops” when we really know so little about the GREATNESS of God. We have people in our society who think they know so much that they can just explain God away. Those people know so little that in their great knowledge of everything they can’t even consider the possibly of the great God we worship. But let us realize the great omniscience of the God we worship and serve and let us strive to know Him better and serve Him in greater ways.

So what are some basic thoughts arising out of our days of reflection on Psalm 139:1-6 and the Omniscience of God? My first thought is that we need to get to know God better while realizing He knows us completely. My second thought is that we need to live our lives as if God was right beside us and knows all about us all the time…because He is and does. My final thought from these reflections is that we need to practice the Word of God continually as stated in Psalm 139:23-24 NIV, “Search me, God and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” God knows us thoroughly when often we do not know ourselves. God is able to search our heart and reveal our defects, which we often do not see or know. In doing this God can then can lead us along His paths. We need to search God’s Word and learn as much about God as we can so we can follow His paths. Tomorrow, God permitting, we begin some days of reflecting on the Omnipresence of God. ("Daily Reflections On God's Word" Volume 1 by Dr. Chuck Davis).
