ADDITIONAL REACTIONS TO GOD’S OFFER OF HOPE! “The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David!’ ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ‘Hosanna in the highest heaven!’” (Matthew 21:9 NIV). People worshipped Jesus on Palm Sunday. They went ahead of Him and followed behind Him giving Him praise that is only due to God. To them, at that time, He was the Messiah, the Son of David. It was a glorious event. It appears they were sincere at that time. But just a few days later many of these same people would be shouting, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” Worship is not something that you just do publicly on special occasions. Worship means to “bow down” or “bow before.” Worship is recognizing the WORTH of our great God and our humble place before Him. I don’t think God is as interested in what we do in public as He is in what we do in private all our days and all our life. God said in Micah 6:8 NIV, “He has showed you, Oh man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Our lives should reflect worship of God at all times.
The religious leaders were quite upset over the uproar of the crowd. They wanted Jesus to rebuke the people because the crowd recognized God’s presence among them (Luke 19:39). The Pharisees were supposed to be teaching the people about God and yet they rejected God and wanted Jesus to scold the people for getting excited about God. This is certainly a lot like our society today. In our society we have religion but churches reject the bible, the Word of God. We have religion but Jesus is considered just one among many religious leaders. We have religion but it is said there are many roads to heaven. We have religion but we don’t really expect God to show up. We have religion but it is just to give people some sense of spirituality. We have religion but man is really His own God. We have religion but it is really just a rally point of political gain. Just as the religious leaders on Palm Sunday rejected Jesus so do most of the religious leaders today reject Jesus as the Messiah/King/Savior of the world. We have religion but what we really need is King Jesus to rule and reign in our life.
“At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him,” (John 12:16 NIV). Spiritual blindness is not confined just to religious leaders. Even disciples can at times be spiritually blind. But give the apostles and disciples credit. They were obedient to Jesus even when they did not understand what He was doing. You don’t want to be spiritually blind and miss the salvation experience. As a follower of Jesus you don’t want to be spiritually blind because you don’t study God’s Word and spend time with Jesus and His followers. Once we all were blind but now we see IF Jesus is our Savior. But once God gives us seeing eyes we need to study His word and let the Holy Spirit remove the remaining blindness from us. So on Palm Sunday there were some who worshipped Jesus, some who rejected Jesus, and some who were spiritually blind. Everyone will have a reaction to Jesus. God’s Word will not return to Him void (Isaiah 55:11). When a person hears about Jesus that person must make a decision about Jesus. What is your decision concerning Jesus?
