PALM SUNDAY--THE OFFER OF HOPE!
PALM SUNDAY – THE OFFER OF HOPE! Everyone needs HOPE. People all around the world need hope. Nations around the world need hope. And because of the fall into sin by Adam & Eve everyone needs spiritual hope. And Jesus came to provide that hope for all mankind. This would be a great time to read Matthew 21:1-11 as a preface to our next few reflections. Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter Sunday, is a celebration of the hope that Jesus came to give the nation of Israel and by way of extension to give to every human being. Unfortunately for the nation of Israel they rejected King Jesus and his offer of hope. But fortunately for the people of the world this did not stop God from providing hope and salvation for the human race. And why do we call this day, “Palm Sunday?” It is because in John 12:13 it says, “They took palm branches and went out to meet him.” Matthew 21:8 says, some “cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.” Palm branches were symbols of peace and victory. And that is what Jesus came to offer. The people of Israel were on the trail of truth but they fell over the cliff of unbelief. They were much like people in our generation.
In spite of their (and maybe our) fall off the cliff of unbelief God still offers the hope of salvation today. Salvation is a deliverance from the power and penalty of sin and God still offers an abundant, fulfilled and satisfying life today. The events we are looking at in this passage of Scripture in Matthew did not happen by chance or accident. They were planned from the beginning of the world. All human history was moving toward the events described in this passage of Scripture. Jesus didn’t wake up one morning and say, “I think I will ride a donkey into Jerusalem today.” This was an event of great magnitude and careful planning. God does not operate in a sloppy manner and neither should we. So the first thing we want to look at is how this event was predicted in Scripture about 500 years before the birth of Christ. The next reflection will share God’s preparation for His offer of Hope on Palm Sunday. ("Daily Reflections On God's Word" Volume 1 by Dr. Chuck Davis).
