THE MYSTERY OF CHRIST IN YOU THE HOPE OF GLORY! What is Paul talking about in Colossians 1:25-27 NIV when he says he was commissioned “to present to you the word of God in its fullness—the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people, to them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” When Paul speaks of “the mystery” what is he talking about? What does the word “mystery” mean as used in the bible? It simply means something that has not been revealed before but now it is revealed, usually through special revelation. God revealed to the Apostles this mystery that the Gentiles would be included in God’s kingdom in a special way just as the Jews were in God’s kingdom in a special way.
The mystery was that God was going to save both Jews and Gentiles through His glorious grace. And the way all this would happen is that Jesus would indwell both Jews and Gentiles. And the second part of that mystery was that God would use the Jewish people to begin to reveal this new and great plan. The prophets of old knew God had a great plan for Jews and Gentiles but they couldn’t figure out exactly how that plan would work. Now, after Christ’s death on the cross, the mystery was revealed to the Apostles of the first century.
Spiritual glory is a mysterious thing that has now been revealed so that we can understand it. How can common man share in God’s glory? And the bible does say we as Christians will share in God’s glory. How can we do that? God has revealed to us that the only way common man can share His glory is through the indwelling Christ. Christ in you is the Hope of Glory. ("Daily Reflections On God's Word" Volume 1 by Dr. Chuck Davis).
